An earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale has hit China's Sichuan province. The tremor was felt across the entire region - shaking buildings in the capital, Beijing, as well as the Thai capital, Bangkok, and Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. US Geological Survey said the quake struck 57 miles north-west of the city of Chengdu at 2.29pm local time (6.28am GMT).

Some 10 million people live in Chengdu.

Drought would appear before earthquake. And it seems rain would happen after the earthquake. Also now it became a theory that we could predict the earthquake according the lasting drought.

Was there a drought before this earthquake?

I take note of the phase of the moon as well. Some of it is done for humour, but some is out of wondering.

I take alot of teasing for it. :)

I got to know your site by reading a chinese forum about the earthquake, quite popular one, I guess some of the other new Chinese members come here by reading a post there mentioning this site.

I am glad this site has not been blocked by the Chinese government yet.

This specific post tells Chinese that most of you are very sympathetic to the victims in this disaster, I have been reading the replies.

Few of the replies felt guilty and mentioned how happy they all were when Sept-11 happened in NYC. I knew that moment when I was so sad and even mad when reading the mainland forum of all the cheering on the tragedy. I felt unspeakable sorry for the fact - but this was how bad it was.

I am glad to see the kindness from the heart of people here eventually have a channel get to China, at least these few of them felt shame on being so excited when people were killed in 911.

But still many now are posting in that forum saying: until I see the money from those Americans, I wont believe they care.

It is a mixed feeling for me... I wish Chinese will be able to get out of the hate that the communist government has planted in their heart. I hope one day they will understand the only way to be truly strong is to be kind to others and respect others.

The traditional culture/value has vanished from mainland after 60 years ruling by communist, it is hard to communicate with those from my homeland, since people lose their ability to love... hate has controlled almost everything.

the person is saying predicted...

but drought cannot be a predictor that an earthquake will happen.

That must be very hard for you and it's so sad that so much culture has vanished.

Your pix are strange. The top one appears to be a model. The bottom one show red rooftops that can’t be seen in the top photo.

I’ve seen this village posted from the outset. What’s special about this burg?

there is one strange factor that might give warning of a major quake.

they are called Earth Lights
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earthquake_light

Even USGS agrees they exist.

Hello All,

In addition to the sadness I feel due to the earthquake, as I read the posts here, I am in complete awe. We here in the US, are having real time conversations with people whom we could never, ever have even thought about talking to just a few short years ago. Our new FRiends, are able to give us an idea of not just the heavy and horrible price their country is paying from the effects of the earthquake, but also their thoughts about the world.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you all, and I hope we can continue this process of learning from each other. Getting to know you all is a wonderful thing.

you’d better watch this before posting any comments. I am living in China, while you left her to US twenty years ago. I think that I know China, my mothercountry, better than you, for China have changed a lot compared with that of 20 years ago.
And,Nytimes is the most authoritative newspapers in US, which is also the reason why I keep reading it. Man, just look at what you fellows observing in this matter, instead of paying attention on trivial newspaper of UK.

You seem to know a lot about earthquakes. I just felt my first one last month on “the madrid fault” scared the hell out of me. I am just curious about quakes, always have been, since my science teacher taught me how close I live to a major fault.
Thanks

I think about that quite often and I remain amazed years later.
