An earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale has hit China's Sichuan province. The tremor was felt across the entire region - shaking buildings in the capital, Beijing, as well as the Thai capital, Bangkok, and Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. US Geological Survey said the quake struck 57 miles north-west of the city of Chengdu at 2.29pm local time (6.28am GMT).

Some 10 million people live in Chengdu.

thx for your answering, I’m a mainland chinese but I’m not a “commie”...well...I have to say that I’m somewhat disappointed at the gov. here in china...What they concern about is more about ideology but not the people...like this time... right after this kind of tragedy, the Olympic torch rely and celebrating kept on...and rumors say that for fear of “spies” the gov banned foreign rescue teams from entering the country...I don’t even know how stupid they’re gonna be...

OK DavFeng,

You made me do it. I had to go check on the liberal democratic site to see what they were saying.

I don’t get around on that site very well because it’s not familiar to me but I did find 2 threads. They are saying about the same as we are. They did complement the Chinese government in providing aid to the people affected unlike Burma (Myanmar) who refuses to help their people. Aside from that it was well wishes and prayers for the Chinese people. Only one person blamed it on global warming.

See, I told you those liberals had a heart! It’s like Tijeras Slim said, ideology does not define sorrow (or something like that).

I understand your feelings about the Olympics. I think it’s because they don’t want for everyone worldwide to cancel their trip because of the tragedy. That’s government, not just China, everywhere. They spent alot of money and they don’t want to lose all their efforts and money spent.

That’s good news!

I’m heading to bed, I know you guys are on opposite hours than we are. You are getting up, we are going to bed. I used to work at a company that bought clothing from China, and backpacks and rain wear. But it was from southern China and Taiwan.

I wish you all the best, please keep posting updates as they become available.

For all the people that respond, there are many, many more who just look and read. And many who will check for updates in the morning.

My prayers tonight will be for you and your countrymen especially all the little children. So sad.

Good night.

This is mostly to our new Chinese friends who may be reading: While it probably seems petty at a time of such tragedy, it is true that some Americans feel dislike and even worse for the Chinese. Some of this is old enmity: My father fought in the Korean War, and I don’t think he will ever get over all of his bad feelings about Chinese people. For some people it is more recent: Many, many factories in the U.S. have closed, and many workers have lost their jobs and had to take lower paying jobs, due to those products now being produced in China. Even my own job is very close to disappearing: The company I work for had over 300 employees less than 5 years ago. Now we are 6, and just barely hanging on, even after drastic pay cuts (to the point that my wife and I have at least temporarily delayed having a second child.) All of our former customers now have their products made more cheaply in China.

Now, I am generally what we call a “free trade” advocate. That is, there should be no restrictions on trade between nations. That belief of mine is being rather severely tested now, as I really love my work, and I love my family even more! However, I bear no ill will toward Chinese people, and, I cannot blame them for wanting to do well and improve their lives. I think it is more the case that the company that I work for has not done a good job of adapting to the new environment. Change is necessary — otherwise think of how many telephone operators we could keep employed at the telephone company, if operators had not been replaced by electronics!

I have posted elsewhere that I find almost all of the many Chinese people I have met to be good people whom I like. Certainly no one here has (or will) change my mind on that. In fact, the willingness of our new Chinese friends on Free Republic to help “us Americans” understand more clearly what has happened in China, strengthens my opinion.

Anyway, I hope this explains part of what you read and hear. Someone else can tackle the political side at a better time, I suppose. Right now, I have been at work for over 13 hours. I need to go home and eat supper — and check the news from China one more time, perhaps.

you speak more like a radical in China. I know our gov. had many fault before, some even worse. And surely it will be so now and in future. But I also know if I am the governnor I may do worse. We are a developing country with many difficulty to overcome.Blaming is helpless. It's a huge country with mass amount people of all kinds.Anything bad could happen. As what i know from the history and humanities, autarchy is the best answer to China in this time.A stupid gov. won't make china like now in only fifty years.Think deeply for each side,be tolerant and cogitative. Democracy is good, but not in western type. It's not suitable for china at least now.Maybe another fifty year later. When we are more prepared. “commie” are not the pronoun of devil. They are also some people with good wish to make everyone's life better.Today's China is a choice of histroy.Ask it why and study it.Don't speak before you think, sometimes it makes things worse. Not everything is so simple to make a judgement on it as black or white.

Easy to say.Hard to do.

Wenchuan: (population of 111,800 - 60,000 unaccounted for)

As a steady rain fell, more than 1,300 soldiers and medics spent the day clambering over landslides and the remnants of a mountain highway before breaking through to Wenchuan, a city of 100,000 and the epicenter of the quake. China Central Television reported that about 60,000 people were unaccounted for across the Wenchuan county.

Dujiangyan: (population of 580,000)

Relief workers used doors wrenched loose from buildings as makeshift gurneys to carry away the bodies of students entombed in a school in Juyuan. All but a handful of the more than 900 upperclassmen were believed trapped under the slabs of concrete, bricks, tile and twisted cables. Only one survivor has been found: a girl pulled free by a rescue team. Her identity has not been released.

Juyuan was a magnet school attracting the region’s top students, from seventh to ninth grade, many of them from isolated communities who boarded in an adjacent dormitory.

Unless more survivors are found, the quake will have wiped out the school’s entire graduating class and about half its student population. Engineers said the school’s walls and support columns gave way almost instantly.

Beichuan: (population of 161,000 - 80% of the buildings destroyed - estimated 7,600+ people dead - 18,000 were believed trapped in rubble)

Just east of the epicenter, in Beichuan county, 1,000 students and teachers were killed or missing at a collapsed high school — a more than six-story building reduced to a pile of rubble, the official Xinhua News Agency said. Another 200 people, mostly children, were buried at two schools in Hanwang township.

Wolong National Nature Reserve:
All 86 pandas were reported safe late Tuesday in the first word since communications with the preserve were cut off. A group of 31 British tourists panda-watching in the preserve also returned safely to Chengdu, the Foreign Ministry said, although there was no word on 12 missing Americans on a World Wildlife Fund tour.
