If you think four years of Hilabama will get us another Reagan, then you better think again

One of the thing I keep reading here on Free Republic is that a lot of conservatives are under the belief that if we get fours of Senator Obama or Senator Clinton that the American public would become so shocked and disgusted that they will be tripping over themselves in 2012 to elect a "true conservative" candidate. I have some issues with Senator McCain, however that's not the point here.

Lets look at the last 40 years. Only two presidential incumbents have lost their bid for re-election excluding President Ford. Ford was a special case, serving out the remainder of President Nixon's term. Even if you consider the 1976 election, the 1976 election came down to single county in Ohio despite all of the Ford's baggage. In fact we had two elections, where one of the candidate, the Vice-President, won extending the term of a two-term President (1988) and another election (2000) where another candidate, the Vice-President lost getting the majority of the popular vote, almost extended the term of the President. So it isn't easy unseating the President.

In 1992, the incumbent lost because the conservative vote was split.

Let's look at the 1980. In hindsight, it appears that Reagan blew out Carter. Governor Reagan soundly defeated President Carter in electoral college vote, however Reagan only receive 52% of the popular vote; Carter got 40%. Obviously the liberal vote was split by Congressman John Anderson. But what some people don't remember is that despite of Iran, the Soviets invasion of Afghanistan, stagflation, double digit interest rates, Billy Carter's Libyan fiasco, and the split at the democratic convention; the 1980 election was not decided until the final weekend before the election.

Some people say we can survive 4 years of Hilabama because we "survived" four years of Carter and 8 years of Bill Clinton. Four years of Carter got us 29 years of an Islamic Republic in Iran and 8 years of Clinton gave us the rise of Al Qaeda.

If Hilabama is elected, they will go to great lengths ensuring that they will never be out of power. They will leave no dime unspent in their pursuit of unabated democrat rule.

Your vote is your business. Just get all of the facts and be prepared to be disappointed.

The Federalists in the 1800 election made the same exact argument...let Jefferson and the Republicans win it all- it's almost as if the Freepers were alive then (funny how nothing new, just a rehash of the past).

The Republicans took over and the Federalists never recovered.

Problem is no true conservative leadership on the horizon.

Barry will be with us for only one term...if he’s elected.
::::::
And in that time, we can only imagine how much DAMAGE that nutjob could do when combined with the insanity of the socialist majority of the Congress...for example, Pelosi. Our ENEMIES are slavering at the thought of that radical nutjob getting into the White House.

I see it as a cheap terror movie, with our freedoms and our Constitution left in a bloody heap on the ground and a bunch of gleeful commies running rough-shod over Americans and what will be left of our country.

"none of these candidates are serious about reining in the spending power of the congress"

You might want to go study McCain's background a little more before you spout that....

They will leave no dime unspent in their pursuit of unabated democrat rule.

I've reached the conclusion that letting the whole place go to hell as quickly as possible is the only thing that will prevent a protracted, say 20 years, of economic misery for my kids and grandkids when this whole house of cards begins to fall anyway.

The debt is beyond the ability to sustain it. Political correctness and rule making cannot be put back in the box. The hunger of government for money to pay for the pensions and perks of those on the teat, as well as social programs for everyone else on the teat, will continue unrestrained. Health care will eventually be nationalized by the government on a state by state basis if the federal government doesn't get to it first.

Face it. The experiment in democracy has failed.

Lesser countries will be forced to tolerate not-so-benign dictatorships to prevent total anarchy. We are too free and too stubborn to suffer that choice.

Instead, we will be happy enough to splinter into groups that compete to start over.

God Save America.

If we got through four years of Carter...we will survive four years of Barry. It won’t be fun, but we will do it.

If the country is so weak that four years of a Democrat in the office of President will destroy it, then it's already all over and there's nothing left to do but stockpile ammo and wait for the shooting to start.

Personally, I will not vote for a socialist, no matter what party they claim to represent.

It’s more than four years, it could be 20 to 30 years depending on how many SCOTUS appointment he gets.

FDR and the New Deal spent billions buying the votes of people hurt by the Depression. It was enough to give them the White House for 20 years and the Congress for 60 of the next 70 years. People forget that in the late 50s and early 60s minority leader Everett Dirksen has 32 other Republicans in his stable while Charlie Halleck had about 150 GOP reps in his.

This Congress with Obama in the WH will spend money ensuring a Dem majority into the next century. There will be so many entitlements that no Republican will get elected threatening their existence. Look how the GOP fully accepts Social Security, FDIC, SEC and all the othe alphabet soup New Deal pgms. Look how a GOP Pres. whose only job before entering elected politics was working in the New Deal, gave us The EPA, OSHA, wage and price controls, and increased fed regs on everything. Of course I speak of Richard Nixon.

This might be tough to believe, but I think American conservatives, absent the threat of the USSR, lost this battle when FDR won reelection. Now I think we're barely holding our own. We may lose some with Mac, we may not. With Obama the war will be lost irretrievably.

Let me clarify... I believe McCain is going to be exactly like President Bush. Rubber stamping all expenditure bills by congress. And two... I understand that McCain doesn't sponsor pork spending. But that is like comparing apples to oranges.

But we will see...

Thank you for saying what I have been thinking (and saying) for a while now. Wake up people, I would love to have a true conservative in office, but that is unlikely in today’s “give me, give me” political environment. We will lose more than just our money if we allow Obama to win. He will find a way to stifle dissent, and I would bet he would try and close this website down.

McCain will do one thing we need and that is Supreme Court Justices that are strict constructionists. Remember the liberals on the court are all old and will need to be replaced by the next president. As such, allowing Obama to have 4 years is a 25 year nightmare....

He won’t nominate a Justice Ginsberg.

What makes you so sure? What record of supporting conservative Justices can you point to that will support your claim.

How can anyone be so stupid to believe McCain will appoint judges in the same realm of Scalia and Alito, when he HATES those types of people?

Source?

Just last week, McCain came out and said that he will appoint conservative judges... vowing to appoint conservative judges like Chief Justice John Roberts Jr. and Justice Samuel Alito and blasting Democratic rivals Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton for voting against them.Go Here

liberal judges won't be selected for the benches...

Maybe. I say maybe. In the meantime our whole democracy will be destroyed so what difference will it make? McCain has already shown he will stifle speech. He has already shown he will bow to the left. After a couple of years of "reaching across the aisle" there will be no aisle left and the Justices will be sitting with nothing to do because the left will have won.

Your post is appreciated, but I wish things were more clear.

The conservative movement is shattered far beyond what operation chaos is doing to the Dems.

God have mercy on us.

I agree with you. If we are at the tipping point and McCain is our counterbalance then we are doomed to fall all the way.

I wish my wife would let me by guns.

Yes. I saw that. I don't believe him. When it comes time for amnesty his deal will be that he will support more liberal judges in order to get the votes for amnesty from the left.
