It’s a really sad story regarding the dog. It’s quite possible that the dog was caught in crossfire. Until they retrieve the bullets, they won’t really know who shot the dog.

Jackson is dead because he was stupid, Aulf is dead because he heroically did his job as a police dog.

The difference is that dogs are BVR (beyond visual range) tools, and tasers, guns, batons are not. They are often employed where the officer can not see and control the animal and the officer is unclear of what is actually going on inside the building etc.

You are supporting the key point which is that dogs are not “cops” and killing them is not the same as killing an LEO.

His story didn’t ‘change’ it was expanded upon. They now have the autopsy results from the dog (he was shot by the gun fired by Jackson at the dog and at the two Pittburgh Police Officers). They also had the time to trace the gun (via serial number) and found that is was infact a stolen gun. Again...more facts have come out...no ‘change of story.’ It is an ongoing investigation.

Why do you insist police put themselves in harm’s way? If you are so sure, why don’t we just have them mow down the criminals from the safety of armored cars?

I mean, you’re so dead-set against the idea that they might not know the guilty from the innocent ahead of time!

I’m glad for the officers’ sake that it was Jackson’s bullet. Still sad for Aulf.

You said:

The reason for the release was Jackson KEEPING HIS HAND IN HIS SHIRT IN A SUSPICIOUS MANNER AND NOT RESPONDING TO THE POLICE ORDER TO SHOW HIS HANDS
That is a change from what Chief Harper had said before.

Maybe you or the PTR just misrepresented what he said?

The reports state that Jackson was shot after he pulled a weapon from behind his jacket!

BEHIND his Jacket.

Which means he did NOT have to “let it fall” or “not show”.

It was a choice to DRAW the weapon.

A choice for which cost him his life... likely saving the life of many others whom he would have shot in some other robbery, altercation, bad drug deal, domestic disturbance or whatever else gangsters do with stolen weapons.

Agreed. Sad situation... I'm glad the officers were safe, though.

Ok you are really being cute now...and I'm not going to play along. But for anybody who really does care about what happened...the gun, taken from the scene, ballistically matched to the slug taken from the Police Dog Aulf during an autopsy conducted this afternoon was fired by Jackson. The gun, via its serial number was traced to a home robbery in the city of Pittsburgh (I believe he said 2006). The officers would not have known that the gun was stolen. Only that the decedant failed to obey the order to 'show his hands' and when he did not Aulf was released upon him (and shot fatally by Jackson) and that two Pittsburgh Police Officers returned the fire (fatally wounding Jackson).

Okay...thanks for the clarification. I was going on the chief’s first story.

Why are you now resorting to strawmen tactics instead of answering the basic facts of the case....

Oh, I know... cause ya just got yer a** handed to ya!!

Dismissed !!

There is nothing cute about this one, nor his ... dare I call it... “debate” tactics?

I will be the first one to yell “Stupid Cops” when they bust down the wrong door of the wrong house and shot an innocent person... I hate cops...

But, this hoodlum, pulled a STOLEN gun, shot a cop (dog) and DIED...

Deservingly so.... good riddance!

Jackson wasn’t shot because he shot the dog, he shot at the officers. Aulf gave his life for his fellow officers, by deflecting the shooter’s attention and aim to himself.

One of the main purposes of a police dog is to reduce injury or loss of human life by sacrificing their own. This is why they are accorded officer status. They earn it.

PennsylvaniaMom>Only that the decedant failed to obey the order to 'show his hands' and when he did not [...]

Article>"The suspect had his hand under his shirt. When the officer told him to show his hand, (Jackson) pulled out a gun," Harper said.

...with his foot, I suppose.

Look...I'm not at all arguing that this was a model citizen. I'm just arguing that with the original story as posted, it could very well have been misbehavior by the cops--yet the knees were jerking like mad.

The same circumstances could have been a thug-cop intimidating a FReeper who was carrying legally, and who then set his dog on the FReeper.

Remember how the Philly cops have treated FReepers--myself included. I am very much in favor of good cops, including my family, but that makes me loathe bad cops even more. And unfortunately, it's wrong to make any assumptions that the cops are right these days in PA.

Again, I am going to re-ask my initial question. How many here would be happier if tonight we were discussing two dead Pittsburgh Police Officers? Or how about if some of the bystanders were shot and killed as well? Cause that is what I am taking away from this conservative forum that cops are wrong. Always wrong. Perp with a gun in his waistband, in the middle of the night, in terribly dangerous part of the city is a paragon of virtue. Cops have no standing when responding to gunplay in the neighborhood to stop someone who is acting like )surpirese) they have a gun tucked in their waistband.

And this is from conservatives...wow!!!

Not at all a strawman.

You were the one who stated:

The firearm used by Jackson was a stolen .357 magnum that was reported missing after a 2006 burglary in Elliot.

He was a thug, a cop killer, a drug dealer, a thief and he died pulling his stolen gun.

F*** him!
So...are you saying the cops knew this ahead of time or not? If not, then it doesn't support your point. If they did, then why don't you conclude that they could have just shot him? ...or at least arrested immediately upon sight, from cover.

You see, you are the one with the strawman, introducing post hoc evidence to the discussion.

I am a self professed Cop Hater.... dozens of posts... they are most easily trigger happy and the system covers it up and I think we should reduce the police state by 1,000,000 fewer cops.

But... in this case, credit where due... I am on the other said in a rare case....

But to “G”mans posts... his what ifs on legit rights to carry...

If the cops say STOP SHOW ME YOU HANDS...

And you do not say LOUDLY... I have a GUN and a PERMIT !

If you are NOT CAREFUL... VERY CAREFUL...

Why? Because I think we mind numbed masses must obey??

FRAK NO!

Because the cops ARE Trigger Happy.

This guy is DEAD... because he was STUPID.

Likely, that is why he is a CRIMINAL too... Stupid is as stupid does.

So, “G”, this isn’t about “rights” or “bad cops” or anything other than a STUPID THUG getting killed by his own poor choices.

Yes, I am discussing this AFTER the fact... so are YOU.

I am discussing that fact that a THUG is dead by his own bad choices...

Don’t read anything else into it.

On what basis was Mr. Jackson attacked?

Because he pulled his hand out when the officers demanded...and it held a gun.

From where we sit, we cannot say that he did that in a threatening way, but releasing a dog on him is definitely an assault on him.

If Mr. Jackson was threatening the officers, then it makes sense to release the dog. I just think we can't assume that 100%...else we give license to authorities to attack citizens at will.

Because the police would never release dogs on innocent citizens, would they?
