PRAYER REQUEST FOR MRS. DON-O
Little House on Unaka | May 5, 2008 | don-o

Posted on 05/05/2008 2:38:07 PM PDT by don-o

My wife Mrs. Don-o is having gastric bypass surgery on Thursday, May 8. If all goes well, she should be discharged on Saturday.

She is very confident in the surgeon, who has done over 1800 of these operations (four hour procedure). She is doing all the research possible on her own and expects do fabulously.

The hope is for almost instant relief from diabetes and three or four related co-morbidities. The major post-op risk, statistically, is pulmonary embolism. In her case, this risk is mitigated by the fact that she's been walking and exercising a whole lot, but exacerbated by the fact that she has a presently incurable and progressive form of COPD (rheumatoid-related bronchiolitis.)

She says if y'all would pray for her she'll breathe a lot easier (!) Thanks, everybody.

To: Mrs. Don-o; All

I am out of the whole cause for Prayer loop here.

I saw Don O /mrs and just lifted up ...

Just curious 101 BG and on a BG lowering drug?????

What is Mrs. Don O illness.
I am assuming something to do with either Diabetes/Pancreatic/liver ailment

Taking a BG eating drug when your at 101 seems really confusing....

I don’t obvioulsy understand what your diagnosis/prognosis is

I just saw the name and knowing yall as old time Freepers I lifted up your suffering...never thought to read what then got this update.

So now my human spirit is curious what happened.

Oh I see gastric bypass and she is adjusting.

Well pretty normal hormonal changes just make sure you eat ten times a day a bite of food, cant eat one large meal and I hope your metabalism kicks in with the choice of weight loss you decided upon.

Yeah big change and it will take awhile for your hormones and all to adjust....

Mr. Don o may want to respite out for a few days...maybe both of you can go get a good hot rock massage...or what ever floats your boat..

No kidding. I have a renewed affection for the inventor of liquid morphine.

Yay, the BG was 97 today. I haven't taken any Metformin since before surgery, and as long as it stays this low (still testing several times a day) I may not take any more metformin forever.

The diabetes-cure aspect of the surgery seems to be NOT entirely dependent on either weight loss or the post-op eating regimen. Of course these two things have their positive impact: people who have the stomach-banding (lap band) without re-routing the intestines, experience gradual improvenment in diabetes, but only concurrent with massive weight loss. In contrast, it was found that people who had the gastric bypass lost all their type two diabetes symptoms in a matter of days after the operation, LONG before they lost weight.

So an Italian surgeon experimented with diabetic mice and surgically restructured their intestine to bypass their duodenum. Immediately these mice lost the diabetes symptoms. Then he reattached the intestines so that the same type and amount of post-op food would, once again, go through the duodenum. Once again the mice displayed the diabetes symptoms. He concluded that the cure for diabetes may be a surgical one.

It's not entirely understood why, but the most recent research indicates that the ultimate cause of Type 2 Diabetes (for most) may be an abnormality of the upper intestine.

A sense of humor is important to the recovery process and obviously the Mrs has it!

Happy Mother's Day and get well soon.
