Bush needs to make the case that the economy was great UP UNTIL THE DEMOCRATS TOOK OVER CONGRESS.
He needs to make it clear that their policies, and their obstruction of Republican legislation is what has allowed the economy to tank. He needs to say the laws passed by Congress are harming the economy, and the Democrats are preventing Republicans from acting with sound economic legislation.

And John McCain should take up this point too. Say he’s seen it happen in the Senate.

Republicans need to get on the offense on the economy and stop playing defense.
They need to push back hard. Make the case that the economy was good under their leadership, but Democrats are in control now, it’s the Democrats’ recession.

Gas prices are high and what do Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer want to do? Why confiscate oil company profits - publicly-held companies which many Americans own a part of through stock - of course! Not that that will produce a single gallon more of gasoline. But open up ANWR - NO! That would upset the caribou! I know, let’s build more windmills!

Senate Republicans yesterday circulated a picture of Democratic senators standing in front of a Capitol Hill gas station on April 27, 2006, when they protested prices of $3.09 for a gallon of regular, next to a picture of the same sign this week, with regular at $3.85 a gallon.

Does anyone have a copy of this?

"Bush lays gas blame on Congress"

Appropriate. And speaking of lay - Pelosi is a lame one.

I only listened to part of the PC yesterday, but had to laugh when the NYT reporterette said something along the lines of “Well Mr President, drilling in ANWAR and building refineries is a LONG TERM solution...what are your short term solutions?”

Drilling in ANWAR and building refineries, if begun years ago as proposed, would no longer be long term solutions...they’d be here already.

I wish Bush would have said “you know, it’s kind of disingenuous to block all my long term proposals and then sit here and ask me what MY short-term solutions are...long-term problems deserve long-term solutions and planning. Short term or stop gap solutions to long term problems are not optimal, and in most cases are probably detrimental”.

That's all well and good; however, I didn't see or hear our president (or our vice-president) mount the bully pulpit to bring the issue to the American people. We should be drilling like crazy, but thanks to the inactivity and stupidity with ethanol we are no doubt light years behind schedule.

Oil off the southeast coast of Florida is being drilled by the Chinese. Our oil is actually being pumped due to the slant between Florida and Cuba.

The 'Pristine' reserve is another joke.

Oil producing companies, like every other American company, is so overregulated by the goons in DC that no new refineries have been built for years.

Our president should have done much more.

It is time to make the connection in the voters’ minds between Enviro-Weenie-ism and high energy prices. Every time an Enviro-Weenie comes around spouting off about this-or-that, we need the voters to feel the hand reaching for their wallets.

Well, IMNTBHO, I would say its 85% democrats (and their fellow travelers in the envior-weenie movement, as well as the NIMBY and LODI crowds) And at least 15% the Administration in not having a coherent, forward looking energy policy beyond “lets drill more”.

Had we supported our coal-oil and shale oil industries in the 70’s and 80'2, instead of letting them die when opec flooded the oil market in the mid 80’s. we would not be in this position of watching, unable to react, while we are held hostage to the whims and vagaries of the world oil suppliers.

Hm....well the Dems in Congress have raised the gas tax and refused to let us drill anywhere - so I’d say the president is right on in this one.
