As hundreds of children taken into state custody from a polygamous religious sect settle into their new foster homes, their temporary caregivers are careful how they introduce them to a whole new world.
First rule: no TV yet.
Foster homes and shelters across the state are scrambling to accommodate 437 children who have until now lived a largely isolated life on the Yearning for Zion Ranch, a sprawling 1,700-acre compound in West Texas.
"These kids don't know who the president is. Don't know that we're at war. Don't know who Elvis was, don't know who the Beatles were," said Bobby Gilliam, director of the Methodist Children's home in Waco, Texas, where some of the children will be staying.

The 50 girls who will be coming to the Methodist home in Waco will be woken up at the crack of dawn and given chores similar to what they did on the ranch. It will take time before they are ready to mix with other children and watch TV, Gilliam said.
Social workers are also being given a list of dos and don'ts for how to deal with children who may not have ever seen television and who were raised in a culture that the state says encourages underage girls to marry older men. Sect members deny the allegation.
Among the rules: don't ask about their religion, don't press if the children avoid eye contact and don't allow them to use cell phones.
Judge Barbara Walther, who ordered the children kept in temporary state custody, said that siblings should be kept together, that babies younger than 1 should stay with their mothers and that breast-feeding mothers with children between the ages of 1 and 2 should be allowed to live near their toddlers.

The children are being housed until they have individual status hearings. Some children could be placed in permanent foster care. Some parents who have left the sect may win custody, while some youngsters may be allowed to return to the ranch in Eldorado.
Yeah, especially with the media saying how horrible the parents are and all the sex stuff going on. Seems like it used to be, people in America weren’t so easily manipulated.
The state is too late.
It used to be the folks here on FR weren’t so easily manipulated either! instead it has turned into a mob to rid the “cultists” of their children and eliminate their rights individually and collectively
How about Legal versus Illegal gun ownership and Christian religion or would I be clinging too much?.....
or would you prefer discussion on immigration and worker permits to mask whats really going on ...... or maybe we should talk about why we haven't opened up ANWAR for drilling (which won't come on-line for a decade probably even if we started today)
Islam was just one point that shows how our government is completely devoid of common sense when it comes to decisions or rational thinking and can't seem to see what is staring them directly in their collective face. There were officials that were told by women who left this compound what was going on...funny how it took a lying nut job from Colorado to break this wide open.......I'm surprised this thing hasn't been thrown out on that technicality yet.....
The State says the same thing regarding those kids that attend “bible camp.”
Nothing lasts forever. I blame most everything wrong today on the ease of mass communications.
Out of all those choices, I found it interesting that you chose Islam.
I have an idea to transition these deprived children.
The CPS workers can divide them up usher them in small rooms and make the watch the show below. That would give them a better idea of how children should be growing up. Then we can liberate them from the oppressive background they have had. It will give them a taste of our real culture — here in the outside world.

‘OMFG!’: Cleavage kissing used to hype kids’ show
Blatant sex, profanity used to lure girls ages 12-17

One of the tamer ads for ‘Gossip Girl’
A new campaign by the CW Television Network for its “Gossip Girl” show features blatant sex and profanity, drawing a horrified response from parent advocates.
The campaign features print and Internet ads, one depicting a teen boy kissing the cleavage of an actress. The two versions include huge lettering across the steamy image, either OMG, which in today’s text-speak stands for “Oh, My God,” or the racier OMFG which adds profanity to the mix.
“It certainly seems as if they keep reaching for the bottom of the barrel,” Melissa Henson, director of communications and public education for the Parents Television Council, told WND.
“I think it’s extremely disappointing they would resort to these tactics to lure young viewers,” she said.
“The Parents Television Council deplores the CW’s deliberate use of profanity and sexual imagery to exploit and further corrupt young viewers, and has warned its members about the show and the new ad campaign,” the organization said in a statement. “Teenagers are a particularly vulnerable audience, and are more apt to be influenced by the programming they watch than adults.”
“funny how it took a lying nut job from Colorado to break this wide open.......I’m surprised this thing hasn’t been thrown out on that technicality yet.....”
It will break many a freepers heart here if this is thrown out on a Constitutinal “technicality.” after all why should these cultist be left alone? it is the seriousness of the charge, not the truth of the evidence which was gathered in an “ends justify the means” style.
“Seems to me the children were safer at the ranch than at public school “
They were safer with pedophiles that at public schools.
Brilliant. Kinda tells where you side.
That's what I thought too. I remember Dave Ramsey, who often calls the IRS 'the KGB,' mentioning a caller (a young adult female) who asked him, "What's this KGB you're always talking about?" Unbelievable.
Probably a lot of things these kids don't know about, they don't need to know about. Except Elvis. Someone has to teach them about Elvis.
Where do think all the “christian” pedophiles hang out? could it be public schools?
Yup, they were safer at the ranch. Plus, the foster families I am aware of are often doing it for the money. It is so wrong.
You are so right, may God be with them.
Umm - the public schools are filled with pedophiles! The NEA is their union!
Kinda tells where you side.
On the side of liberty! Against the tyranny of the state - even if their road is paved with good intentions. The children do not belong to the state - arrest the perps, after there is cause, but do not take the children away to an even worse environment.
“Do you have an agenda here?”
Do you?
“You ARE mormon, “killer” are you not?”
I am LDS and also have sworn to uphold the constitution from all enemies foreign and DOMESTIC. and the monachre is killermedic not “killer” as I can asure you I am not. Thanks
AMEN!
Seems like that rule isn't so much for the comfort and concern of the children.
