As hundreds of children taken into state custody from a polygamous religious sect settle into their new foster homes, their temporary caregivers are careful how they introduce them to a whole new world.
First rule: no TV yet.
Foster homes and shelters across the state are scrambling to accommodate 437 children who have until now lived a largely isolated life on the Yearning for Zion Ranch, a sprawling 1,700-acre compound in West Texas.
"These kids don't know who the president is. Don't know that we're at war. Don't know who Elvis was, don't know who the Beatles were," said Bobby Gilliam, director of the Methodist Children's home in Waco, Texas, where some of the children will be staying.

The 50 girls who will be coming to the Methodist home in Waco will be woken up at the crack of dawn and given chores similar to what they did on the ranch. It will take time before they are ready to mix with other children and watch TV, Gilliam said.
Social workers are also being given a list of dos and don'ts for how to deal with children who may not have ever seen television and who were raised in a culture that the state says encourages underage girls to marry older men. Sect members deny the allegation.
Among the rules: don't ask about their religion, don't press if the children avoid eye contact and don't allow them to use cell phones.
Judge Barbara Walther, who ordered the children kept in temporary state custody, said that siblings should be kept together, that babies younger than 1 should stay with their mothers and that breast-feeding mothers with children between the ages of 1 and 2 should be allowed to live near their toddlers.

The children are being housed until they have individual status hearings. Some children could be placed in permanent foster care. Some parents who have left the sect may win custody, while some youngsters may be allowed to return to the ranch in Eldorado.
Ping.
The article at the link is quite long, but most of it is a rehash of subjects already covered on FR.
I still find it hard to believe that this happening here in the US.
Good idea to keep them away from TV. Lots of trash on there they don’t need.
So the state is gearing up to completely screw over the lives of hundreds of kids....wait a second, the state does that every day to millions upon millions of kids.
It’s surreal that the state is raising the kids right..temporarily, as they prepare to transition them into modern Brats.
Looks like everybody is stepping up to help these kids except LDS.
Re-education camps.
Random comments that come to mind:
>> The 50 girls...will be woken up at the crack of dawn and given chores similar to what they did on the ranch.
You know, it suddenly occurs to me that Mrs. Tick and I might be able to take a couple of these hard workers in! :-)
>> It will take time before they are ready to mix with other children and watch TV, Gilliam said.
WHY is “TV”, like, the second thing out of his mouth??!? Are we seriously that much of a TV society? Is that really better than “no TV”?
>> Among the rules: ... don’t allow them to use cell phones.
Uh... they’ve never seen TV, and they’re worried that they’ll know how to use a cell phone? Weird, if you ask me. What are they worried about? Who are they going to call that strikes fear in the hearts of Benevolent Big Brother?
AND ONE GENERAL COMMENT:
There’s an overarching stench of “Religion BAAAAAD. Look what religion do! BAAAAD. State GOOOOOD! State help. Worship state.”
What do you mean...it happened at Waco sans the fire fights and mass suicide! It happened at Ruby Ridge and a man lost 1/2 his family to the violent overthrow of his beliefs! It has been going on for decades now. The government categorically oversteps its bounds when it comes to personal freedom. But i guess the ends justify the means especially when dealing with “cultists.”
She chose him, he chose her...
no problemo....
We're living in a country that wants to tolerate anything but refuses to upset the apple cart when we know something wrong is going on.
How do you think Johnny "Jihad" from California was made?....and these nut cases are converted to Islam from jail?
In some parts of this country you have Mosques preaching that it is the duty of the immigrated muslims to this country to make it part of Islam. You can read about it yourself in a book titled "Now they call me Infidel" by Nonie Darwish or in another book titled, "My year in Radical Islam, a Memoir" by Daveed Gartenstein-Ross. Yeah, that last one was written by a jewish kid from Oregon.
The scary part for me is that I'm getting to the point in my life where nothing surprises me anymore.
Somehow, to me, it’s different when it’s not violent. It’s even more distasteful.
Disgusting
Nice segue into Islam, very subtle.
Because then it seems on the up and up with the common populace and if it happens that way it is less noticable too! How many Jews fought tooth and nail when they were sent to their deaths?
This in no way means I don't support arresting the men who are in violation of the law, but it there is a world of difference between arresting a perp and removing a whole community of children.
Seems to me the children were safer at the ranch than at public school or foster care the the Kennedy compound as a passenger of a Kennedy or hunting with Cheney.
Just because we don’t jump in front of a camera and say “ooh, look at all the good we are doing” doesn’t mean we’re not there helping. And if we did we would just get beat for trying to further “brainwash” the children and women. Nice bait though!
