Former '60s Radical Is Now Considered Mainstream in Chicago
Washington Post ^ | April 18, 2008 | Peter Slevin

CHICAGO, April 17 -- In the 1960s, Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn saw themselves as urban guerrillas who just might be able to overthrow the U.S. government and force an end to the Vietnam War. They were members of the Weather Underground, a radical offshoot of the antiwar movement, who went into hiding for a decade after a bomb accidentally exploded, killing three members of the group.

Nearly 30 years after surrendering to police, Ayers and Dohrn, both in their 60s, are tenured university professors whose work on school reform and juvenile justice have won them bipartisan respect.

Ayers is an informal adviser to Mayor Richard M. Daley and has been awarded more than $50 million in charitable grants for his promotion of small schools as a solution to a crisis in education. Dohrn lectures widely on children's law and serves on a variety of boards and committees. Together, they have raised three boys in the intellectual haven of Hyde Park, where Sen. Barack Obama is a neighbor.

For months, their connection to the Democratic presidential candidate -- they hosted a gathering for him in 1995 when he first ran for the state Senate and later contributed $200 to his reelection campaign -- has been a source of growing anger among conservatives. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's campaign picked up on the connection to suggest skeletons in Obama's closet. On Wednesday night in a televised debate with her rival, Clinton (N.Y.) mentioned it as "an issue that certainly the Republicans will be raising."

In Chicago, however, Ayers is considered so mainstream that Daley issued a statement on Thursday praising him as a "distinguished professor of education" and a "valued member of the Chicago community."

I can already see the TV ad. Cut from B&W POW images, to bombs exploding.

“While John McCain was spending 7 years being tortured in the Hanoi Hilton, Barack Obama’s friend Bill Ayers was planting bombs to kill policemen and soldiers in the United States. On 9-11, Ayers said he only regretted that he did not plant more bombs.”

Cut to planes flying into the WTC and exploding, go to Ayers quotes about wishing to destroy American imperialism by all means ncessary etc.

Cut to recent photo of Obama and Ayers smiling and embracing.

This issue goes to Obama’s judgment and character.

I think Barry/Barack/Barry/Barack (I have two faces) Hussein Obama's character is being lain out quite accurately. As we "question" it, the answer is in our faces. Only the sheep are even trying to ignore it.

Only in the USA would these terrorist traitors not be dragged to a wall and shot.

They are alive thanks to the freedom they enjoy, and would destroy.

Did you read how Michelle Obama invited Ayers to speak on a panel (with Barack) that she organized at the U of Chicago? The topic was “Should a Child Ever be Called a Super-Predator?”

I gather that Ayers, like Barack, opposes trying minors as adults regardless of how horrific the crime. IIRC, outlawing this practice was one of Barack’s big projects in the Illnois legislature.

There is no "bipartisan" in Chicago and increasingly in the state. The only splits are on racial lines and they usually involve how much each is allowed to steal. Ayers and Dohrn aren't the only ones. There are several others aged hippies that have wormed their way into taxpayer revenues.

Daley is smarter than people give him credit for,he is able to dissolve any potential challenge by buying out those that would have been adversaries. His father was the same way.

Nice of him to be able to build his dynasty on the taxpayer’s dime.

“Travis” — are you delusional?

I’ll bet Granny’s Rum bearing cow that within the entirety of the RNC there aren’t enough brains, spine, will or balls to submit that ad..

If it EVER shows up on television, it will be because some private organization finances it, produces it and submits it to the media..

Yep!

The choices for Governor are indeed slim here in Texas.

Naturally the RNC or the McCain committees won’t sponsor such an ad. It’ll have to be done by a private group, the way the swifties did it.

I agree with you. I lived through the radical 60’s and we are now seeing the results from these change agents. I wish I could say socialsim came quickly, but no, it’s been a show moving tornado.

We were too busy juggling the balls, which is the intent, to focus or do justice to the flurry of issues we faced.

One of my biggest regrets is that my grandchildren will not know the America I grew up in. They will think I’m a doddering old lady when I describe America then as compared to now.
