Stephen Colbert called it "an announcement." Chris Matthews went on the Colbert Report last night and, responding to the host's importuning to declare his candidacy for US Senator from Pennsylvania, ultimately stated: "I want to be a senator."
Over on MSNBC, Morning Joe played a clip of their colleague's appearance, then chewed it over.
STEPHEN COLBERT: There's a lot of talk that you might be running for Arlen Specter's seat.
Matthews first played it coy.

Matthews for Senator! Ping to Today show list.
He’ll have to give up his journalistic objectivity.
Maybe we can have a Senate with Al Franken and Chris Matthews in it.
Then people may finally realize that the whole endeavor is a joke.
I think he and Al Framken would make great Democratic Senators-— Just imagine both of them in a battle with Harry Reid??? what a show that would be
Pennsylvania? I thought Matthews was a San Franciscan.
Personally, I would support him running for Senator from CA. Trading one nutcase lib for another nutcase lib makes no difference.
Chris Matthews would fit right in.
Another useless broken bat for the equipment bag.
so the smarmy ‘Pissy Chrissy’ wants to take the place of a liberal republican senator to be a socialist dim senator.
Wow.
Matthews is originally from PA, and ran for Congress from there years ago. He lives in Maryland nowadays.
He’s on the Colbert Report, Comedy Channel. I believe that as much as I do the Onion, or Scrappleface.
The seat has been held by an idiot for so long. Why change now ?
He would be no better at attracting voters than viewers. The boy runs in last place in his time period. In politics, if you do not get the most votes, you do not stay in the game.
.....it would be great if Zell Miller returned to the Senate then he could fight a duel with Matthews or at the least cane him like they used to do in the old days.
His brother ran recently as a Republican.
LOL
Where to begin..
I understand, but there have been serious reports of him working behind the scenes to explore a candidacy. Please have a look:

Hah! Indeed.
Well, if so, at least he’d be off the air while he ran.
