FLDS women seek Texas governor's help
Deseret News ^ | April 13, 2008 | Nancy Perkins

SAN ANGELO — A Texas judge on Sunday ordered law enforcement officials to immediately confiscate all cell phones in the possession of FLDS women and children now housed in temporary quarters here. "I just called to say, hi. They are about to collect the phones, I think," one soft-spoken FLDS woman said during a telephone call to another member of the Fundamentalist LDS Church who was outside of the shelter. "I don't like what they're doing."

Several of the women inside the shelters spoke by cell phone to the Deseret News on Saturday to describe the living conditions there. Children could be heard crying in the background of each conversation. The News published an article on Sunday, quoting the women who complained there was no privacy and that their children were getting sick.

FLDS faithful outside the shelter are convinced Sunday's court order is a direct result of the women speaking to the newspaper.

"This is nothing more than retaliation of Child Protective Services to punish those who were disclosing what is really happening behind the walls of this concentration camp," said Don, an FLDS member who asked that his last name not be used. "These are my family members."

I believe in the first amendment. Do you?

Charge the women or let them talk. Period!

“In this case it’s pretty clear than many of them do not. They are adult citizens, how do you justify detaining them without charge?”

They are in Protective Custody.

No charges.

It’s a totally different thing. They were told they would be protected. Some might have even believed it. They are getting cell phone calls from their ‘husbands’ telling them if they cooperate with police, they will GO TO HELL.

These women and children need to be in protective custody until the LEO’s have finished trying to get testimony, and evidence, or they determine the accusations are unfounded.

That is the way it is done.

Protective Custody usually includes the fact that your ‘privacy’ gets a little violated.

These women probably have more privacy now, than they did at the FLDS.

I could be wrong, but the FLDS and Warren Jeffs have a substantial history.

None of the women are being held against their will. They went voluntarily, according to the news. So Habeas Corpus is not an issue, counselor.

That does make a difference, but if they went voluntarily, then they are free to leave, correct? And free to use their cell phones. (Although as I said, I'd prefer the authorities get a court order to tap them, so as to produce further evidence.

But Habeas Corpus still applies to the men taken into custody, doesn't it?

Number one, quit insulting every male on this forum with your misquided tagline.

Second, if that woman had skimpy clothing you’d jump on it as proof she was a loose woman. If she has modest clothing you jump on it because it’s abnormal.

There’s nothing that can be taken away from that photo other than the fact that she is sitting down. You don’t know her. You don’t have any idea what she has or hasn’t done, has or hasn’t participated in, agrees with or disagrees with.

Excellent post. They are free to leave. Without their cell phones.

The first call to the domestic violence hot line was made via cell phone, maybe they are picking them up as evidence.

The rest — sitting on the steps looking forlorn, writing to Gov. Perry and this article from a SLC paper is an attempt to sway public sentiment.

I'm not swayed.

Or perhaps this person is being protected in such a manner that she can give information, without the press and other FLDS membersbeing all over her family.

In that case they'd not say that they had not located her. They'd say she's being held in protective custody at an undisclosed location and her identity is being protected.

I don't mind "public servants" not telling everything they know to the press, but I don't want to be out and out lied to either. Generally speaking, even government officials are loathe to do that, because of potential legal ramifications.

Surely you recall the overwhelming support at this site for the actions of Mike Nifong

That is something I hadn’t thought of.

It would be good if it is true.

I am reasonably sure that the RLDS, LDS, and Mormons have no involvement in the radical practices of the FLDS, Warren Jeffs, and his elite staff.

It may be that only the inner circle of ‘brothers’ is permitted to get the really young girls, and the rest of the folks are practicing acceptable (by their religion) polygamy.

But there seems to be proof of some underage girls/50 year old men forced rape going on, and it needs to be stopped.

The Truth.

“This is nothing more than retaliation of the inner circle of FLDS to punish those who were disclosing what is really happening behind the walls of this compound,”

Then you support allowing the press to see the conditions the women and children are being held in. I agree. Nothing to hide, no reason not to let the press in.

Hey, if this is all trumped up or bogus charges, then that needs to be found out too.

There is a lot of land, and a lot of money, and a lot of property involved.

Someone, especially those close to local politicians, could really make a killing if the RLDS folds.

With the negative attention the FLDS is getting, the LDS, RLDS, and Mormons are getting some heat.

They might want to help shut down the FLDS. Who knows.

But, I do believe that there is some really bad hanky panky going on in that compound, and it needs to end.

“That may be true, but they were still taken away from their mothers, were they not? “

For many of these children, their ‘mothers’ are in name only.

They aren’t sure or told who their biological mother is.

They are traded like baseball cards between ‘husbands’.

Sure great! They say you can't watch them wash their clothes because it's sacred. What would they claim if you turned a passel of press jackals on them?

Oh...That is until they were commanded to demand it via cell phone from their handlers. Same stunt they pulled in Arizona.

If the women ask for the press to come in, and the conditions are found to be reasoned, then they look all the more suspect. Don’t you agree?

If the conditions aren’t good (and I don’t have any reason at this point to suspect they aren’t), then they should be improved.

I don’t see a down side here. The government’s case isn’t jeopardized by this.

Except in the case of the 137 volunteers who left, who are most likely alpha-females for want of a better term, they are truly accessories to the crimes of child abuse and rape.

Minor children can’t be shown. So sure — gather them all up for a rollicking press junket and while they are gone, move the kids to an undisclosed location.

They are free to leave and free to talk to the press.

I believe that it is reasonable for the press to send in a few pool reporters to observe the conditions. It shouldn’t take but a few minutes during which time the kids could be moved off to the side behind curtains.

I don’t support the women coming out to see the press. This makes it possible for them to lie about the conditions.

Show the conditions and be done with it. They’re making a big deal out of something that should have been facilitated in minutes to avoid the public having any doubt.

We are ever so carefully being tacked off course here.

The article was Re: cell phones and Governor Perry.

The FLDS said:

FLDS faithful outside the shelter are convinced Sunday's court order is a direct result of the women speaking to the newspaper.

But they are there voluntarily. If I go voluntarily to a restaurant that says, “No cell phones.” If I don't like it, I leave. They too can leave.

It's not for the FLDS members to say the minor children are in a poor environment when they were picked up for child endangerment. Probable criminal child endangerment.

Children could be heard crying in the background

How stupid as if that is anything meaningful. If children were in Disneyland they would be blubbering half the time over something...

It is for any U.S. citizen to state if they have a beef with the government. That’s the most important reason we have a first amendment. The government allowed those women to accompany their children. Those women were not charged. They deserve to have every constitutional right there is until they are charged with a crime. None of the children or the women are charged with anything. I haven’t seen more than a man or two that has been taken into custody or charged with anything.

Folks, I am amazed at the number of conservatives who think every person at the farm was a criminal. Can we tone it down a bit until the charges are made public and there is some time for the defense to make their case?

I too have serious problems with what appears to have been taking place at the farm, but unlike a lot of other folks I have confidence in our system of justice and that justice will be served. Lets give our criminal justice system a chance to work, and allow constitutional guarantees at least until charges are brought.

The children aren’t second class citizens. Their legal gardians have made some charges. There’s no reason whatsoever to cast them in any other light than what they truly represent at this point, a reasoned request for review.
