Gartner fails to point out that partly the reason Windows has gotten so portly is the media themselves harped on MS for years back in the early 90s to add more and more stuff to the operating system. They hated the fact that Windows didn't come with the latest and greatest tools.

Besides, you can get 8GB of ram now for around $130. And still people bitch.

Vista cost the school where I work a ton of money.

The computers we used worked great for internet research, office 2003 (documents and spreadsheets), learning games, and keyboarding teaching software. They had small hard drives, but anything we saved would go on our server. When Vista came out, the windows updates were so large that they filled our hard drives and made most of our computers un-usable.

From the Computerworld link in the article: So Microsoft didn't give XP a blanket extension? Absolutely not. Dix made it clear that the operating system isn't getting a general reprieve. "There is no plan to extend sales of other editions of Windows XP beyond June 30, 2008," he said before launching into a recitation of what Microsoft sees as Vista's success in the market.

Vista's SUCCESS??? What are they, blind?

Interesting. It is expected in a few years that most internet browsing will be done on Cell phones. Now, this does not mean an IE problem, since it is already being hurt by Firefox, etc. The problem is that people will not be using their computers - typically with windows - to do it. As software becomes more generic and less platform specific, there will be no need to get the os everyone else has. When that happens, Microsoft may go the way of another once giant. Sears...

Glad I made the switch to Mac.

Vista sucks.

My MacBook Pro is the best computer I have ever owned.
