MATTHEWS WEIGHS SENATE BID IN PA HORATIO AT THE BRIDGE FOR SPECTER MSNBC TV star Chris Matthews has been quietly sounding out Democrats across Pennsylvania about seeking the Democratic nomination to oppose Senator Arlen Specter, who shows no signs of slowing down or retiring, in 2010.
Matthews has pondered a Senate bid in Pennsylvania before but deemed the water too cold. Matthews has been meeting with former Philadelphia City Comptroller Tommy Leonard and has approached Governor Ed Rendell to inquire about recruiting campaign personnel.
Unfortunately, like Pat Buchanan before him, Chris Matthews has hours and hours of television tape going back 20 years and thousands of words in columns written in the same time period. His Senate bid will die of his own words.
The New York Times Magazine will publish story by Mark Leibovich this Sunday which will illustrate the point.
Specter who has historically run strongly in non-republican constituencies, including Jews, African Americans, Hispanics, Asians and some Democrats, is a prodigious fundraiser and a wily survivor. Specter's hard-line against the Bush Administration violation of the Constitution on privacy matters has won important support for Specter among moderates.
Although Specter has made it clear that he intends to seek the Republican nomination, his brand in Pennsylvania, like Lieberman in Connecticut, would allow him to run as an Independent if the Republican Primary becomes troublesome. Specter has made no indication that he is considering this option but it is still a fact. I expect a vigorous Specter to be the Republican nominee for the U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania in 2010.
As Specter is one of my oldest friends in the Senate, I will do whatever I can to help him.
As for Chris Matthews - see you in Philadelphia.
Specter vs. Matthews? I might even hold my nose and vote McSpecter - or not - who cares?
Specter would stomp Matthews flat! Matthews is more delusional than Al Franken (Minnesota did elect Ventura), but Pennsylvania will pass on this joke talk show host. I hope he does run so that he can be humiliated.
Specter seriously better have a truly conservative Republican primary opponent running against him as well. It’s worth a shot since Specter nearly lost the GOP nomination last time, and Toomey would of won without both President Bush and Mrs. Bush campaigning for Specter the last time. Ugh!
hope that chrissey runs and gets his butt kicked....
bet that would send a real thrill up his leg!!!
I guess this source isn't even trying to be subtle about having a case of Bush Derangement Syndrome.
What’s going on with Franken-dork these days?
Roger Stone is one of Arlen’s friends??? YIKES....although Roger does know a lot about Spitzer’s sex life also!
In Matthew’s own word...HAAAAAA!
it’s Roger Stone, a Nixon consultant, liberal republican operative. Iguess to be fair, social liberal/economic conservative. He was a Spitzer nemesis and helped push the prostitution story forward by providing details on the socks in a letter his lawyer wrote to the FBI in December.
I doubt it - Pennsylvania is a strange state to run in. It’s basically red except for Pittsburgh and Philly and their burbs...
Or as Fast Eddie says it’s Alabama in the middle....
He’s scratching his butt-I mean his head- up there somewhere, I guess.
Run Chris Run!
Chrissie is a prissie pissy.
Hiliarious. Nope, no bias in his reporting. Impossible. I mean how could a guy running for the Democratic ticket against a liberal RINO possibly be biased in favor of the left?
