The head of San Francisco's Board of Supervisors (Aarron Teskin (sp?)) is very angry at Newsom, calling this "a PR event organized by the government of China."

While Aaron is probably a flaming loon, he hit the nail on the head on this point.

The scuttlebutt one reporter shared is it looked like the chinese government was allowed to call the shots since last noght and All the agencies involved had to do it their way..

What a mess whoever was in charge.

Sen Feinstein sold out SF and the country years ago with her connections to the Chinese Communists.

Her Blum of a husband has made billions from her power in the Senate

I wouldn’t doubt her dirty hands are in on this PR for China fiasco.

I despise the fact that the Red Chinese government had anything to do with operations on American soil.

BUT

If it was Newsom who orchestrated this at the last second, at least he kept violence from happening.

This whole affair probably should have just been cancelled, given observation of Europe, and what a common-sense intelligence operation for the SF government should have been able to figure out. (Note: I'm not talking about an ugly kind of intelligence with intrigue, just "we're having this event, what the heck are groups planning on doing?" common-sense info-gathering.)

I think the reality is that this is egg mostly on the face of Red China and the IOC. And I couldn't be happier!

The key word here is “allowed”, they could not have done with if somebody who should have known better didn’t decide to just hand over the reins.

My guess is that the CCP used their leverage with the significant ethnic Chinese voting population of SF to force Newsome’s hand and like the spineless weasel that he is he immediately caved.

It sounds like Willie Brown was supposed to be a torch-bearer, but apparently he either got lost in the shuffle or vetoed by the Chi-Comms.

What a shame - Willie Brown is such an exemplar for high Olympian ideals! /s

It may be true that mayhem was widely avoided as they ran the initial relay course backwards ‘til it choked up with regrouping protesters, it definitely could have gotten nasty so he does deserve credit for that.

That the IOC and China bear the brunt for it even coming to this in the first place is a shame in more than a few folks minds.

Yup. And yet she gets easily reelected term after term by the stupid leftists who are supposed to be such supporters of human rights!

Madness. Utter madness.

Willie Brown was one of the last torch bearers and oddly, was the one who first confirmed that the torch & company was heading to SFO to say goodbye to the ChiComs.

"The torch protests have stirred up patriotic resentment among many ordinary Chinese who feel they politicize a sporting event that should be a celebration of 30 years of economic development and opening to the outside world."

Reminds me of my comments on the Terri Dailies #97 a couple of days ago. The symbol of the torch is the reality for the leftists and it supersedes the sensible. How many on either side appreciate this precious torch emanated from the Munich games courtesy of A. Hitler and company. One announcer on CNN today referred to it, but nobody picked up on it.

I was down on the Embarcadero and around Justin Herman Plaza from about 9:30 am to about 4:00 pm. There is no way that torch was going down the Embarcadero. Simply no way. There were thousands of protestors there and very few cops. Had the torch appeared there would have been pandemonium. The whole thing should have been cancelled. Having a fake-out is just a lousy commie trick.

This is humiliating for Communist China, which is great.

Meanwhile our own govt. is sleeping with the enemy. It’s difficult to even buy most things, if they are not made in China. We are help Red China to make it’s military even stronger. How dumb is that? Red China is the enemy.

I send away for Made in U.S.A. clothes, but I wish I could do more.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Your comment is right on

This has turned out to be a great PR stunt for the American and Chinese Communists

All “conflict” was virtually avoided and America will seem like --to the over one Billion Chinese in China-- a dangerous place where something as peaceful and unifying as carrying the Olympic Torch through a large city in the USA has to have a police escort.

All the Tibet protest stuff...including the GG Bridge incident earlier this week... will not be seen in China.
