That's Dylan, all right. He owns the songs and probably feels that he can repaint them anyway he wants. He certainly can repaint his songs however he feels. I know some who go to a Dylan concert and leave disappointed because none of his songs sound like they're 'supposed to', but that's why every Dylan concert is a new experience. I love the way he plays A Hard Rain's A Gonna Fall nowadays, he gave it a rock beat and it sounds great, better than the original in fact. As far as I know the only way to hear the new version is live, which is kind of a shame as I'd like to have it in my collection.

I saw Dylan a short while back in SF, at a small auditorium. Sound was not too good and the vocals were difficult to understand. Suddenly I heard enough of the lyrics to recognize the song: "All Along the Watchtower". I had heard that song 100 times in my life and was hearing it for the first time, or so it seemed.

I remember seeing a review for the soundtrack of “I’m Not There” that said the principle problem was all of the artists were far too reverent with the songs. They were doing them all traditionally, whereas Bob had changed them all up dramatically in the last few years.

You should check out some of the bit torrent sites such as
Dime a Dozen You need to sign up but every Dylan show is posted on this site pretty much a day or two after the show, audience recordings but done with cutting edge equipment.. Some are really quite excellent sound quality....its all there and available to anyone with the time and energy to download.
