Today I came across this year-old, largely biographical article about Barack Obama. It reads as though Lizza relied on Obama for large chunks of the piece, with other material coming from his books and interviews with those who knew him.
About 2/3's down the page, I came across this astonishing nugget:
After many lectures like this, Obama decided to take a second look at Wright's church. Older pastors warned him that Trinity was for "Buppies"--black urban professionals--and didn't have enough street cred. But Wright was a former Muslim and black nationalist who had studied at Howard and Chicago, and Trinity's guiding principles--what the church calls the "Black Value System"--included a "Disavowal of the Pursuit of Middleclassness.'"Wright is a "former Muslim"?!
I've never seen this anywhere else. Where did Lizza get it....from Obama? From Wright (whom he apparently interviewed)?
Have any of you ever heard that before?

According to what I have read, it is acceptable and even honorable in that religion to lie in order to achieve the ultimate goal.

You got it right. It is permissible for muslims to lie in order to further their cause.
Al taqiyah -- the principle that it is Ok to lie if it gives advantage to a Muslim over a non-Muslim.

I read someplace that Rev. Wright majored in "Muslim Studies" at Howard.
I'll see if I can find it in my extensive O'bama file.

When he took over Trinity United Church of Christ in 1972, Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr. was a maverick pastor with a wardrobe of dashikis and a militant message.
He graduated from Howard University and earned bachelor's and master's degrees in English with a focus on African spirituals. At the University of Chicago Divinity School, he earned another masters degree in the history of religions with a focus on Islam.

Thanks. Not exactly what I’d consider a unbiased source. I tried to find a legitimate biography of Wright that mentioned his education, but I didn’t find anything.
Anybody know of historical cases of muslims utilizing takeya claiming to be Christian (temporarily) in order to advance the umma?
Wright has said he has know him for 30 years and back when he was known as Louis X, the calypso singer.
