Feral cats, endangered birds each have defenders [Animal rights activists battle each other]
New York Newsday ^ | April 7, 2008 | PATRICK WHITTLE

Every spring, as birds flock back to Long Island [N.Y.] in droves, Eileen Schwinn wonders whether this will be the season the cats get the last remaining pair of piping plover at Mount Sinai's Cedar Beach.

Schwinn, president of the Eastern Long Island Audubon Society, is racked with emotion over what she says is a "dramatic decrease" in species such as plover, bobwhites and ovenbirds threatened by the claws of stray cats.

But Cedar Beach's 30 or so feral cats have a powerful ally in a smorgasbord of animal rights groups, some of whom say Long Island's strays - estimated to be in the tens of thousands Islandwide, according to one rescue group - have as much right to the beach as birds.

The controversy in Mount Sinai reflects a battle playing out from Atlantic Beach in western Nassau County to Sammy's Beach on the South Fork - birders and cat lovers at loggerheads over what to do about feral cats believed to be preying on bird species as common as the tern and as rare as the ground-nesting piping plover.

Local government agencies charged with resolving the disputes often find themselves caught between flying fur and feathers.

"It's a very sensitive issue; it's a nationwide problem,"

Sorry, but we all know that everything is caused by AGW, and ants killing birds is clearly a classic example.

:-)

What about the disease carrying birds that enter your yard? You don’t mind that huh. I hope you get caught killing a cat....I’d love to see you arrested. But, I’m sure you won’t get caught because you know it’s wrong and will hide like a thief and do it. But the one up above is watching....killing Gods creatures instead of helping them shows a cold immoral cruel heartless person.

Bird flu: father infected by dying son

Maybe it's time to get rid of the birds? More feral cats needed.

Whats your malfunction? are you playing with Mommy's computer again ? We're Talking about feral cats here not peoples pets

killing Gods creatures instead of helping them shows a cold immoral cruel heartless person

A rational human being would realize the damage that feral cats are doing to the environment. They have nearly wiped out the population of songbirds in some areas, and in Australia have pushed some of the small marsupials to the brink of extinction.
even Steve Irwin talked about the need to eliminate their numbers.

Get real

I dont have a hissyfit evey time I see a bird

I have a laser-guided robot that shoots, kills and incinerates feral cats inside its shiny metal torso to meet its daily energy needs.

Should I patent it?

You’re insane. Why should I have to assure the safety of one of your cats when it trespasses into my fenced yard? If my dogs ran the neighborhood and violated your property rights, then I should be held accountable. That’s not the case.

Oh, I forgot. Cats must be protected from all harm anywhere on earth, even when they climb into machinery or enter a dog’s private domain.

I do thank God I don’t live next to someone like you. After I had animal control remove 28 feral cats from the crazy cat lady’s property, she sold it and moved.

Yup. Squirrels and floppy-eared bunnies, too. Don't you squash bugs in your kitchen? Same thing.

You find ONE case of a bird flue in China while in the U.S. there are 22,000 cases of Cat Scratch Fever diagnosed annually.

Feral cats need to be put down and domestic cats should be taught to leave poultry alone and eat seafood

But who cares if pussy wipes out entire species. and the cat worshipers say they care about animals.
Bravo Sierra.

euthanize the feral cat colonies, and start handing out hefty fines&jail time for those who insist on feeding them. And start enforcing the animal abandonment laws as well.

As I explained in another post and on my page, it’s chemicals and loss of habitat wiping out birds(amoung tons of other things like raccoons, poison, glass windows, etc....not cats).

At least cats don't kill people.....look at the stats on dogs! Maybe we need to eradicate dogs then...

The dog bite epidemic: a primer
The number of dogs
There currently are 74.8 million dogs in the USA. (American Pet Products Manufacturers Association (APPMA) 2007-2008 National Pet Owners Survey.)

The number of victims

A survey by the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta ("CDC") concluded that dogs bite nearly 2% of the U.S. population -- more than 4.7 million people annually. (Sacks JJ, Kresnow M, Houston B. Dog bites: how big a problem? Injury Prev 1996;2:52-4.)

Almost 800,000 bites per year -- one out of every 6 -- are serious enough to require medical attention. (Weiss HB, Friedman D, Coben JH. Incidence of dog bite injuries treated in emergency departments. JAMA 1998;279:51-53.)

Dog bites send nearly 368,000 victims to hospital emergency departments per year (1,008 per day). Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Nonfatal Dog Bite–Related Injuries Treated in Hospital Emergency Departments — United States, 2001, MMWR 2003;52:605-610. Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report is published by the CDC.

16,476 dog bites to persons aged 16 years or greater were work related in 2001. (Ibid., Nonfatal Dog Bite–Related Injuries Treated in Hospital Emergency Departments — United States, 2001, MMWR 2003;52:608.

Every year 2,851 letter carriers are bitten. (US Postal Service.)

Getting bitten by a dog is the fifth most frequent cause of visits to emergency rooms caused by activities common among children. (See Weiss HB, Friedman DI, Coben JH. Incidence of dog bite injuries treated in emergency departments, JAMA 1998;279:53; also see US Consumer Product Safety Commission, Injuries associated with selected sports and recreational equipment treated in hospital emergency departments, calendar year 1994. Consumer Product Safety Review, Summer 1996;1:5.) Note that this comparison is limited to activities that children more or less voluntarily engage in, such as playing sports, playing with animals, etc. Dog bite injuries are not specifically set forth in Federal Interagency Forum on Child and Family Statistics, Child Injury and Mortality, pp. 36, 37, 136 and 137, which states that the leading causes of emergency room visits overall are falls, being struck by or against an object, natural or environmental causes, poisening, being cut or pierced, and motor vehicle accident.

An American has a one in 50 chance of being bitten by a dog each year. (CDC.)

The number of fatalities
In 2007, there were 31 fatal dog maulings in the USA. (The complete list, showing names, dates and locations, is found at Canine Homicides, a section of Dangerous and Vicious Dogs, at this website.)

They took place in 15 states. Eleven deaths were in 4 one bite states, of which there are a total of 15. Eight deaths were in the three mixed dog bite statute states. Twelve deaths were in 8 strict liability states, of which there are a total of 32 plus the District of Columbia. (See Legal Rights of Dog Bite Victims in the USA to learn how the states are categorized.) A chart of these figures appears below:
