In an ABSOLUT World according to Mexico (Absolut responds to ad outrage)
Absolut Company Blog ^

Posted on 04/04/2008 1:51:32 PM PDT by mnehring

We have received many comments on an ad showing what an ABSOLUT world would look like from a Mexican point of view. We are sorry if we offended anyone. This was not our intention. We will try to explain. Though you may not agree, I hope you understand......

.....The In An Absolut World advertising campaign invites consumers to visualize a world that appeals to them -- one they feel may be more idealized or one that may be a bit "fantastic." As such, the campaign will elicit varying opinions and points of view. We have a variety of executions running in countries worldwide, and each is germane to that country and that population.

This particular ad, which ran in Mexico, was based upon historical perspectives and was created with a Mexican sensibility. In no way was this meant to offend or disparage, nor does it advocate an altering of borders, nor does it lend support to any anti-American sentiment, nor does it reflect immigration issues. Instead, it hearkens to a time which the population of Mexico may feel was more ideal.

As a global company, we recognize that people in different parts of the world may lend different perspectives or interpret our ads in a different way than was intended in that market. Obviously, this ad was run in Mexico, and not the US -- that ad might have been very different.

In an Absolut World, Sweden would be Halliburton-land where one could drill for oil, the markets would be totally free, and everyone would work for a living.

There is my vision, I wonder if they will make an ad out of it?

And the thing is, a lot of the Mexican leftist elite are trying to steal our name for ourselves. They call themselves “Americanos” because they live on the American supercontinent, and call us “Estados Unidios”.

Ditto!

Unfortunate choice of words...

My letter to the brilliant Eva who was in charge of this decision.

Eva
Are you the one that came up with the ad showing half of the United States owned by Mexico?

If so, you or others, must surely realize that this is going to kill your U.S sales when all said and done? I wonder if the U.S. market accounts for more revenue than the Mexican market for your products?...I wonder?

My bottle went down the drain this morning.

I wish this country had enough principled people that a call for a boycott would actually do something. I’m still outraged over this. It shows what the world thinks....and knows about us...they can do and say whatever they want and they know we’re too apathetic to do anything. If ABSOLUT thinks the Mexican market is more important than the US market we should let them have it.

I was thinking of other ads Absolut could run appealing to the desires of consumers. One I thought of was replacing Israel with Palestine. Another one would be to go back to year and a half, when Nazi Germany and Commie Russia had both invaded and divided Poland. How about an Absolut ad depicting an independent Tibet? How would China take that? There are all kinds of border disputes, while the US-Mexico border is not in dispute, it is settled and has been settled.

Idiots. Absolut screwed the pooch. I don't know how much this will hurt them, but it will hurt them.

Try Titos. Made in Austin, Texas. Its available at Trader Joes in California for 17.99/per750 ml. Filtered 6 times and very smooth. I discovered it by accident and is on my favorites list.

Lame attempt at self-justification. There is no legitimate historical perspective or sensibility, Mexican or otherwise, that would justify drawing Mexico's borders like this.
