Dems Vow Political Crossover Crackdown
The Times (of Northwest Indiana) ^ | April 3, 2008 | Bill Dolan

CROWN POINT, IN | Indiana's Democratic chairman said his party is ready to challenge the votes of any lifelong Republicans who attempt to vote as Democrats in the May 6 primary.

Indiana Democratic Party Chairman Dan Parker said he is concerned Republicans may try to cast crossover votes to skew results in the close presidential primary between U.S. Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.

"I'm only talking about crossover with mischievous intent," Parker said of his party's plans to challenge suspicious voters. "If there is a coordinated effort by Republicans to affect the outcome of our primary, that would be something the party would try through the challenge process to keep those voters out."

Lake County GOP Chairman John Curley said he finds that appalling.

"I haven't run into too many Republicans interested in a Democratic race, but you can't stop someone from voting a 'D' or an 'R,'" Curley said. "This is America."

Lake County Elections Supervisor Michelle Fajman said challenges to voters can be made by party officials armed with voting records for the past 10 years.

The challenge process would work like this:

Voters must declare their party affiliation in spring primary elections.

Local party officials watching the polling locations then could check the names of voters against a list of all registered voters that shows past party declarations.

Fajman said any voter whose party affiliation is challenged can either decline to vote for the party in question or sign an affidavit, swearing under oath that they voted in the last election for a majority of the regular nominees of the party.

She said a grand jury could investigate anyone who signed a false affidavit, but challenges are rare. Fajman said she hasn't received any indication of state or local Democrats mounting a serious voter challenge at present.

Republican response Lake County GOP Chairman John Curley said he finds that appalling. "I haven't run into too many Republicans interested in a Democratic race, but you can't stop someone from voting a 'D' or an 'R,'" Curley said. "This is America."

I tend to disagree with the premise of the cross over.
That said , the effect will be the subject of many future arguments.

Honing their suppress the vote skills for the general election, eh? Amazing how they continue to get away with that, all the while screaming that the pubbies are doing it. Well, they are masters at projection too.

Break ... a Rush caller now pointing out that they'll be profiling the voters!!! Asks if the ACLU will intervene. ROFL

Heck, you’re not even allowed to check if they’re in the country legally.

A 5th Amendment violation for sure. Signing any affidavit to vote in a primary is unconstitutional.

Is this an open primary or isn’t it?

Are election officials just making up rules, or are they operating under the law when a challenge is thrown down?

The real joke here is that the Republican party is almost non-existent in Northwest Indiana. They don't even bother to field a candidate in a lot of the municipal offices. Therefore, for all intents and purposes, the Democratic primary is the general election. By denying Republicans in Lake County a Democratic primary ballot, you are denying them the right to vote for county sheriff, judge of the circuit court, etc.

Voter disenfranchisement?

No problem, as long as the voters are Republicans.

They don't care if illegal votes are cast FOR Democrats, they don't want ID's to be shown, but they want the Republicans identified.....what is next, Gold Stars?

Personally, this deliberate cross-voting in an attempt to affect the other party's primary is not only dishonest, and skews the data as to what might happen in the general, but if the rats had done the same in our primaries - everyone would be screaming bloody murder.

don't there flaming - I'm outta here

How would the Dems prove an R voter didn’t vote the way he said in the last election? Hello? Secret ballot? Ring a bell?

They can't do anything about it except change the rules after the election. Since my hometown basically only has dems running against each other, I would have to switch affiliations every time I want to vote in a local primary.

I like not having to declare a party. I would like to keep it that way.

YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO BECOME A DEMOCRAT IF YOU HAVE BEEN A REPUBLICAN!

Heck, that's not so unusual... the muslims have a very similar policy.

Barry is openly advertising here in Indy. He is letting voters know they only have until April 7th to register to vote in the primary.

This Parker can itimidate all he likes, but he can never prove intent.

I thought the dimocRATS were all for counting every vote in every election!!!!! I guess that is only when they can manipulate the outcome.

Watch the old movie "Keye Largo" especially the part where Rico (the bad guy) goes on about counting and recounting the vote until it comes out right.
