Inasmuch as the Cold War was Worldwide in scope and therefore a world war, we are already involved in the next one. Iraq is very much an analogue of Vietnam in that respect. We are trying to keep Iran from overwhelming the Middle East. This Cold War II has been going on really since 1979 and the Ayatollah unpleasantness of that year. As with Cold War I there is always the prospect of this all heating up to a full blown worldwide War. There is probably less prospect of that if we take care of Iran massively and finally very soon.

It “feels” like a world war is coming. Though I think Iran will be the center of it, not Kosovo.

I remember the Reagan years. So many people were genuinely scared about the prospect of nuclear war with the Soviets. Some believe the end of the world was imminent and not in Biblical terms.

I remember being concerned, but it never “felt” like a world war was coming.

Now, the feeling is there.

Kosovo may not be the “cause” of it if it does indeed come, but the recognition of Kosovo is definitely one of those watershed moments.

And if it does start over Iran, some folks will still find a way to blame the Serbs.

I share your sense of impending conflict. I'd add North Korea to the short list of places to worry about. As a matter of fact I'll stick with President Bush's list of the axis of evil.

I think Iran will continue to fight through client states like Lebanon. Why mess up you’re own country? I don’t see that changeing unless we pull their covers and attack them.

The only way the Russians could even hurt us was if they launched all their ICBM’s today. Without total surprise, we’d crush them in any fight. Our technology superiority gives us a first strike capability that would strip them of their nuclear delivery capacity. Their bombers are jokes. Their nuclear missile subs are no match for Navy. And stealth combined with cruise missiles and JDAMS would destroy the ICBM’s in their silos. More mobile missiles don’t have the range and can be shot down by our missile defenses. Their army is a joke — in Grozny a bunch of Islamic idiots shredded a Russian battalion in a few days. Compare that to US forces who shred Islamic idiots without hurting the civilians hidden aroudn them. Their navy is a rusting radioactive junkpile — useful only for stealing money from India and China. Their air force flies the planes that US made planes have played target practice with for three decades.

Only Serbian idiots think that Russia will come to their aid with anything more than talk.

And no, there’s no way we can blame Serbia for Iran. Serbia would have to actually matter on the world stage. They only matter when they face unarmed neighbors or quiet Austrian princes out on a peaceful drive. They may be the only people that make a Jihadi seem brave and intelligent.

The first shots are usually fired by the ones who consider it their advantage at the time.

A large number of historians consider 'peace' an interlude, with war being the natural state.

Our politicians of course aren't too bright, or have agendas - which aren't clearly spelled out.

Fer instance; the same Congress that votes for free trade with Communist China, also hear testimony from Generals and Admirals about how they need more money to deal with anticipated threats from Communist China .

"I share your sense of impending conflict."

I do, as well. I was talking to my cousin last year, and said the same thing -- something is just not right, I feel like something really bad is coming on a worldwide level and I have never felt that way before.

This is what really worries me. I’ve lived long enough to be aware of all kinds of different conflicts in the world. I’ve never felt the sense of foreboding that I do now.

We need really stable, smart, and ethical people at the helm. We also need people willing to be strong and to do the right thing regardless of whatever the agendas may be.

Yes, but who stands with each warring side?

If that comes, the independence of Kosovo will be the watershed moment.

You don't make a convincing case for this. The conditions that caused WWI no longer exist. Kosovo may be of personal importance to you, but it is not the sort of stuff on which world wars are built.

World wars are built on the aspirations of aggressive conquering nations who have delusions of invincibility ... modern countries such as Iran or China can cause world wars; Kosovo cannot -- who would be the opposing sides?

The opposing sides?

West vs. East.
