CHICAGO - The morning trip to school for dozens of teenagers here had all the normal signs: bleary eyes, oversized jackets zipped up against the chill, the seemingly endless wait for the bus.
But there was tension underlying the routine: The trip was under the watchful eyes of parents, an alderman, a principal and police.
The escort to and from Crane Tech High School this week, dubbed "Operation Safe Passage" is just one of the ways Chicago is dealing with a wave of violence that has stunned the city.

Bears repeating. As you point out, the article doesn't break out that statistic, only the one about "Guns" being the second leading cause of death in 10-24 year olds.
Despite this omission, the pictures tell me all I needed to know and confirmed my assumptions.
Sorry Charlie, Chicago already bans handguns that were not registered before a certain date, I believe it was some time in the 1970s. Also, many, if not most, of the suburban municipalities around Chicago also ban guns, Morton Grove being the most well known of the bunch because of the national media attention it received when it's ban was upheld by the courts.
I suppose it's expecting too much from the brainwashed public, but it seems odd that so many people expect criminals to obey a gun ban law when they have no compunction about breaking every other law on the books, most of which are punishable by a much more serious penalty.
They are not “battling” any violence. The left caused this violence. Their policies make it worse.
Reform schools, harsh discipline for teenage thugs and lawbreakers, an agreement among society as a whole to severely punish criminals irrespective of age, accept no lame excuses or calls for “rehabilitation” and understanding in lieu of punishment, is what worked to quell and contain youth violence and is the only thing that will do so again. Nonsensical garbage about dialogue, discussion, and education is what makes violent street trash unafraid to engage in violence and murder knowing the extent of their punishment will only be bed-wetting, namby-pamby liberal clap trap and policies that call for mercy and understanding and blame law abiding civil society for crime and social chaos not the subhuman filth that perpetuate crime and mindless violence.

I'm not Charlie. I'm Kristy! I know that criminals will NEVER give up their guns. It was a sarcastic remark because I KNEW guns were already banned there. Didn't you see the < / sarc > tag?

Stop paying teenage girls to have babies out of wedlock and this trend will stop in about 12 years.
