Clinton Hints At Sharing Ticket With Obama

NEW YORK (CBS) ― Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton hinted at the possibility of a democratic "dream ticket" with Sen. Barack Obama.

Speaking on the Early Show on CBS, Clinton said "that may be where this is headed, but we have to decide who is on the top of the ticket."

Clinton said the race between her and Obama remains "incredibly close," with just "smidgens of difference" between them.

Clinton's remarks after her campaign won two big states yesterday: Ohio and Texas. She also won Rhode Island. The wins enabled her campaign to break Obama's 12-state winning streak and pick up some momentum of its own.

Speaking later on the Early Show, Obama congratulated Clinton on her victories while maintaining he would be able to wrap up the democratic nomination.

"We still have close to an insurmountable lead in delegates," Obama said. Obama said his campaign had won nearly twice as Clinton as well as a greater share of the popular vote.

Why would she choose him? He has not won any big states. She is going to win the Northeast and West Coast without him. I don't see where he brings anything to the ticket as VP and might lose votes.

But what do I know? Notta lot.

I disagree . He would be foolish to take the deal.

It would be the end of his political aspirations.

Thanks for the ping on this one, StarFan.

I've been worried about this "dream ticket" scenario from Day One. A nightmare for McCain and the GOP, IMHO...

There seems to be quite a number of FReepers of this opinion. Me included.

“Why would she choose him?”

There’s only 1 reason - to unify the party against McCain. It’s their best chance to beat McCain.

However, Obama will never stand a chance at the presidency in 2012, if he settles for VP now. Because Hitlery is not going to make people happy and she’s going to drag her VP down with her. If he waits and let’s Hitlery screw up and then runs in 2012, he’ll have gained more ‘experience’ in the eyes of voters, and stand a much better chance of being the nominee then.

Agreed. If Hillary and Obama team up (either way), this could be a disaster for the Republicans.
Talk about record turn out for the Dems. I don’t care who gets the nomination for the Dems as long as they don’t team up.

He’s good, but in all reality, I think he would be most helped with a black or a woman.

Hillary will never pick Obama as her running mate. NEVER.

Oh, she will flirt with it, and dance around it, and hold it out like a tantalizing and dignified compromise.

And in the end she will look somewhere else to someone who poses NO threat to her at all. To someone who walks quietly behind her and picks up the messes she leaves.

Someone like Huma, only less manish.

Interesting observation. Keep mentioning this at the Bar. It's very catchy.

Hey, great question, Ken. I had forgotten all about The Breck Girl's delegates... last I heard he was leaning toward Obama, I believe.

Hey, I like that, RabidBartender! Yes, happygrl... we need to keep that "out there". I think bumper stickers should be made if they run as a combined ticket.

Hillary will never pick Obama as her running mate.

But if she gets the nomination, she could pick Britney Spears as her running mate and she'd still be the next President.

I've been saying this from the start. If the dems have a Hitlery/Osama ticket then McInsane is toast, because there's enough googoo-eyed idiot Dhummies that will vote in droves to elect the first woman/black ticket just because it will be viewed by the world as SOOOO progressive.

I agree. I can't see how McCain can win vs Clinton/Obama.

These 2 on a ticket would be a hanging softball for McCain to knock out of the park with a little conservatism. He's probably not smart enough to realize that though.

Not only that, but if any on McCain's staff even swung at the pitch, he would probably fire them.

Edwards delegate update
We previously analyzed the status of Edward’s delegates, and determined that he would keep his 4 New Hampshire delegates, but his 14 Iowa delegates will very likely vanish at the next stage of Iowa’s convention process.

So what’s up with his 8 South Carolina delegates? Well after researching, and discussing in detail with the experts at The Green Papers, it seems clear that as long as Edwards keeps his campaign “suspended” as opposed to “ended”, he will keep all of his delegates. Why is that? From the South Carolina Delegate Selection Plan:

If a presidential candidate is no longer a candidate at the time of selection of the At-large delegates, then those At-large slots that would have been allocated to the candidate will be proportionally divided among the remaining preferences entitled to an allocation.
This clause is also present in the national rules. So since Edwards is still technically a candidate, he will keep all his delegates. Now if he ever officially ends his campaign (although it’s not clear why he would), it all depends on the meaning of “time of selection of the at-large delegates”. If it’s the time of the primary, than he keeps his 3 at-large delegates. If he ends his campaign before the state convention on May 3, and you consider the “time of selection” to be when specific delegates are actually selected, then he wouldn’t get the delegates. I’ve been told this clause is actually open to debate, and there was talk of challenging it early in the Gore-Bradley matchup in 2000. But for now, the question is moot, as Edwards has not ended his campaign, so he keeps his 3 at-large delegates. And clearly, since no such clause exists for the district delegates he keeps those 5 under any circumstances.

So we’ll keep Edwards at 12 delegates in our delegate tracker.

Update: Answering some questions in the comments: If Edwards wins any future delegates, as long as he keeps his campaign in “suspended” mode, he will keep those delegates into the convention. However, it is highly unlikely that he will win any future delegates, as he has to beat the 15% threshold in any Congressional District or statewide. That’s not going to happen.

But to make things clear, the 12 delegates he has, like any other delegate, can vote for anybody they want to. They can vote for Edwards, they can vote for whoever Edwards endorses, or they can vote for themselves if they want.
