I wonder how Jimmy Carter and Robert Kennedy would respond to the charge that they’ve lent their names to a warmonger.

It’s time to form an alliance with Columbia. We need to cut the head off this snake

The obvious point here is that Ecuador and Venezuela have been supporting the communist rebels and their terrorist war against Columbia, and they were afraid that stuff taken from this success would prove it. The bluster is meant to cover that fact and put Columbia on the defensive. It shouldn't. The US should offer to give Columbia 72 F-16s tomorrow, along with 200 M-1s and 300 Bradleys. That will put paid any idea Venezuela has of attacking directly.

Wonder how Chavezs pacifist friends in Hollywood will respond to this? Bush's fault.

Commie China will just send a bunch of their hardware to Chavez. And we will have an arms race in south America.
Chavez needs to be neutralized, not bartered with.

That will put paid any idea Venezuela has of attacking directly. A US CVN off the coast of the border region, combined with a US vow to protect Columbia from a hostile aggressor would call Chavez's bluff.

Do you think we have 200 Main Battle Tanks and 300 Bradleys to spare?
Chavez knows that we can't provide any significant support of the materiel or the manpower sort in Colombia.

Colombia’s Army and Navy are fairly well equipped and their ground foces have combat experience thanks to fighting FARC. Colombia’s real disadvantage is in air power which is geared mostly for the counterisurgency role. IIRC, they are still operating Mirages and Kfir C.2s.

Besides, Colombia’s AFV mix is not bad and is geared for their rugged terrain. Their main deficiency is in air power in that they do not have air superiority fighters; their air force is mostly used for COIN work.

Color me surprised at Chavez latest "caper."
It seems whenever someone assumes complete power of a country, they start thinking regional expansion...
Is Putin next?
