n New Jersey, Hillary Clinton holds a double-digit advantage over John McCain in an early look at the race for the Garden States 15 Electoral College votes. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in the state found Clinton earning 50% of the vote while McCain attracts 39%. Clinton leads by twenty-one points among women but trails by two among men.
However, if Barack Obama is the Democratic nominee, the race in New Jersey will begin as a toss-up. The Rasmussen Reports election poll finds McCain with 45% support and Obama with 43%. McCain leads by twelve among men while Obama has a five point edge among women. This is one of the few states where Clinton outperforms Obama in general election match-ups against McCain (Florida is another).
McCain does well in New Jersey by attracting solid support from GOP voters and also picking up the votes from 25% of Democrats. This could be an example of what Michael Barone had in mind when he said we will have to throw away the old Red-State, Blue-State electoral maps for Election 2008. Four years ago, John Kerry won New Jersey by seven percentage points. In Election 2000, Al Gore carried the state handily and defeated George W. Bush 56% to 40%.
Massachusetts has... 3 times for major office (twice for Ed Brooke for Senator, once for Deval Patrick for Governor).
McNitWit is going to lose. Keep drinking the Koolaid.
If McCain has a shot in NJ, its all over for Obama. He can go back to his Southside Church.
It’s a long list of automatic Democrat states: NY, NJ, PA, CT, MA, VT, ME, OR, WA, HI, IL, WI, MI, CA, MD, DC, quite a few.
If McCain can win in NJ, he can win anywhere. Of course, it is kind of like that old line about not wanting to join any club that would have me as a member...
George W. Bush won 46% of the vote in New Jersey in '04, so NJ should be a state Republicans can compete it regardless.
But doesn't this mean that Hispanics will be thankful to McCain, and therefore many will vote for him?
NJ is pretty fed up with Dems, even though it keeps voting for them. President Bush made NJ a single-digit race back in 2004 and I think that Senator McCain can keep it competitive, too. Even if we don’t win it outright, keeping it competitive is a good plan.
BTW, I live in NJ and on the grassroots level, I have talked with life long Dem here who have told me they would never vote for Obama, and once more would vote for McCain
Is it me or you want Obama to beat McCain? I don't see your last post merely as a factual statement. You seem to be rooting for him.
“If McCain has a shot in NJ, its all over for Obama. He can go back to his Southside Church.”
So. The Repubes have figured out how to beat the Dhimmicrats....by becoming them.
I grew up with an ornery old Italian Catholic grandfather. Trust me, old Italian Catholic guys (and gals) won’t be voting for Barack Obama. Neither will old Irish guys or other old ethnic guys. And states like New Jersey and Pennsylvania are where these guys live.
The Democrats are basically giving us huge chunks of the northeast if they nominate Obama. I don’t think they can make up for those losses elsewhere.
Scary scenario indeed...but if W didn’t manage to pull it off, how would McCain? I’d rather fight a Repub president again on immigration than a Dem...think about it.
Dream on.
The guy has a head likea rock. But surprises always happen in politics.
This is significant news. Maybe, if McCain maintains his strength in NJ, he can help unseat Frank Lautenburg.
Correct. Any Republican who can arry New Jersey in a Presidential Election can’t be a Republican.
The fact that Clinton beats out McCain but Obama doesn’t reflects the very serious racial divides in New Jersey which has one of the largest minority populations in America and one of the most Democratic.
There was a thread earlier this week claiming 20% of Dems might come over and vote for McCain if Obama is the candidate.
I got a feeling it may even be higher than that.
