CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) - Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez is sending 10 battalions of troops to country's border with Colombia.
He's also ordered the Venezuelan embassy in Bogota closed and say all embassy personnel will be withdrawn from Colombia.
The announcements by Venezuela's leftist leader pushed relations with its neighbor to their tensest point of his 9-year presidency.
Chavez is also warning that Colombia could spark a war in South America, calling its U.S.-allied government "a terrorist state" and labeling President Alvaro Uribe (oo-REE'-bay) "a criminal."

Yes, yes I do. Mainly for other reasons, but a failed assassination attempt would make things 100 times worse.

I went to googleearth and scoped out the Columbia/Venezuela border and most seems pretty bad. For most there aren’t any roads. There is one section in northwestern Venezuela where he could take his tanks.
I call BS

Matter of fact, it wouldn’t hurt the US to move men and tanks to our borders.

As we have seen in countless other wars. It’s not the hardware that makes the most difference, it’s the training.

Same here. He may be trying to move elements that he perceives as “troublesome” in an effort to forestall a coup attempt. That, or he is speaking out of his arse.

Lets not get carried away. Moving tanks & troops to the border doesn?t mean they are ever going to cross the border. It?s probably just a lot of bluster.
True but it costs big bucks to keep a standing army in a field...just standing.
Hugo already has economic problems.
He promised his supporters butter but they're getting guns.
Not good.

“Just a thought: Seems I recall a bond between Iranian President Ahm-a-nut-job and Chavez. Is this action of Chavez an attempt to divide our military attentions, and lessen our presence in the Middle East in light of impending defensive actions of our Middle Eastern ally Israel?”
What does Iran and Venezuela have in common? Their actions lead to the rising cost of gasoline which leads to more Bush bashing which leads to a Democrat in the White House.
Look for other areas in the world to act like this in the coming months. And look at Congress. They will not focus on this because of secuirty concerns which will hurt them.
Hence Roger Clemens.

Bush or Congress won’t do that, so it’s up to one group to do that.

but war helps communist countries a great deal because they can demand a lot of money from its citizens and get it “for the cause”

“U.S. oil companies will use this as an excuse to raise oil prices?” Sounds like something out of the Democrat party play book. Oil, my friend, is bought and sold on the open market. Consumers decides what the price will be by how much they are willing to pay.
