CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) - Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez is sending 10 battalions of troops to country's border with Colombia.
He's also ordered the Venezuelan embassy in Bogota closed and say all embassy personnel will be withdrawn from Colombia.
The announcements by Venezuela's leftist leader pushed relations with its neighbor to their tensest point of his 9-year presidency.
Chavez is also warning that Colombia could spark a war in South America, calling its U.S.-allied government "a terrorist state" and labeling President Alvaro Uribe (oo-REE'-bay) "a criminal."

Does anyone still think Pat Robertson is a nut case for saying that we should assassinate Chavez? More than ever, I think we should do it now. He’s crazy!

I don't know how many battalions they have. I guess I could look it up.
I'm looking to see if chavez has bought any T80 tanks from russia or any Leopard 2's from Germany. I hope not if it comes to a shooting war.

It won’t even take a carrier battle group. Maybe one sub, some battleships, a frigate, and a bunch of B-52s droppings tons of ordnance.

” There are only so many little wars the United States can take without losing the ability to wage a large war (i.e. against China and Russia, for instance)”
That’s why we have nuclear weapons. Sad to say, but the only thing keeping China and Russia in place is our nuclear arsenal.

Then there is the question of terrain. Is the border terrain actually suitable for tanks?
What can they do when they get there?

give the USMC a good xcuse to go in Someone pointed out earlier that Chavez wants to keep his power. Difficult to second guess a megalomaniac and to figure out what he's up to.

I hope half a million armed citizens would saturate our side of the border.

It appears that there is a difference in the definition of a battalion when discussing a tank battalion vs. an infantry battalion.

The US drug war advisers will be portrayed by Chavez as advisers in a planned war against Venezuela by Colombia. Exxon’s counterstrike against Venezuela’s seizure of it’s assets within the country must be really hurting Chavez, not to mention the abandonment of the country by other foreign companies. Wonder how long until they storm our embassy.

For just a moment, imagine 10 battalions of the mexican military sent to our border. How would that strike you?The Mexican government was suicidal? But I definately get your point.

We get about 40% of our oil from this moron. It WOULD be cheaper to dethrone him and establish a democracy in that country.
