Obama's evasion (surrounded by anti-Israeli hacks)
Powerline ^ | 3/1/08 | Paul Mirengoff

The Washington Post reports on the efforts of Barack Obama and his campaign to "rebuff[] challenges on his Israel stance." Part of that "challenge" relates, of course, to his foreign policy advisers some of whom, the Post accurately observes, are regarded by some Jews as anti-Israel.

The Post reports:

Obama took on those issues in Cleveland when he told Jewish leaders that Brzezinski, a national security adviser to President Jimmy Carter, is not a key adviser but merely someone he had lunch with and exchanged e-mails with "maybe three times." Malley, a State Department official in the Clinton White House involved in failed efforts to complete a comprehensive Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement, "is one of hundreds of people who have sent advice to the campaign," Rep. Robert Wexler (D-Fla.), an Obama supporter, wrote in the Jerusalem Post yesterday.

It's nice that Obama, under pressure, is distancing himself from Brzezinski. Nonetheless, Obama does not dispute that Brzezinski is advising him. It will be up to pro-Israel voters to decide whether the allegedly small number of contacts is sufficiently reassuring.

As to Malley, the Washington Post published a list of "the national security and foreign policy advisers to the leading presidential candidates from both parties." Malley (along with Brzezinski) is one of approximately 20 advisers who appears on Obama's list. Malley also appears on a similar list in Newsweek. Either the Post and Newsweek got it wrong, or Wexler's attempt to minimize Malley's role is quite misleading.

Finally, so far as appears in the recent Post story, Obama and his campaign simply avoided discussing Samantha Power. Not only is Power quite likely the worst of Obama's advisers when it comes to being anti-Israel, but she is also indisputably a key adivser. According to Ed Lasky and Richard Baehr, Power left a position at Harvard to work for Obama for a year after his election to the U.S. Senate and is now identified as a "senior foreign policy advisor." Moreover, apparently it was Obama who sought out Power, not the other way around.

As I noted here, Power has attacked Israel for its response to terrorist acts launched against it from Southern Lebanon, criticized the New York Times for not sufficiently trumpeting alleged Israeli war crimes on the West Bank, and blamed deference to Israeli interests in part for our involvement and tactics in Iraq.

It's easy to see why Obama and his campaign would rather not talk about Power and her views. It will be interesting to see whether liberal MSM organs like the Post permit this evasion.

I can’t understand the east coast Jewish mentality. They are pro Dimocrap and liberal. If Osama gets elected and the Irananians threaten to Nuke Israel, will the liberal Jews be satisfied with Osama’s lack of response?

Blame needs to be placed on the GOP leadership who has failed miserably in exposing the anti-Semitism of the DemoRATs including Osama Hussein Obama and Hitlery who both, IMO, bear no love of the Jewish people and Israel. There’s a severe lack of gonads in the leadership of the GOP and the disgraceful RINO candidate for POTUS.

If you can explain the thinking of the east coast "Jewish community" on any issue, that would be a feat worthy of some sought after prize. It's at least close to self-loathing.

Are you suggesting that the GOP, a party that has rejected antisemites and racists, should publicly criticize the other side for not doing the same?

Understand, the GOP is asleep at the wheel, as a party they criticize nothing, nor do they trumpet their accomplishments.

The let's get along party.

Been there done that, GWB won't respond to the threat either.

It's Israel's problem, they have to deal with it, the US needs to be prepared for the reprecussions, which will include retaliation.

Would premption be appropriate, the next President will decide that.

The RINO’s aka Moderates in the GOP need an infusion of testosterone. No guts; no glory! They expect our military to go to war and defend this nation, yet they can’t even defend our Party. McLame and the leadership of the GOP are busy sucking up to Liberals while our enemies, foreign and domestic, plot to dismantle our country.

I believe GWB has Iran in his sights and Iranians know he will act if the threat is real. However, Osama will want to talk if the threat to Israel is real. He has said words to the effect that Israel isn’t worth us getting involved. BTW, an attack on Israel will also be an attack on us. We cannot be left untouched if Israel is attacked because we have the capability to stike back with great effec - at least with this President.

Right on, ExTexasRedhead.

But the general election campaign hasn't begun yet, so please give McCain the opportunity to expose the 'Rats on these issues. I'm not all that optimistic that he will, but it's too early to put him down for this.

The Republican Jewish Coalition could be a big ally of the McCain campaign on this, depending on how much McCain wants to get into it. The RJC newsletter for January-February had an article entitled "Obama's Links to Farrakhan Draw Scrutiny." It zeroes in on Obama's pastor, Rev. Jeremiah W. Wright, Jr., who visited Qaddafi in Libya with Farrakhan, and just last December presented Farrakhan with a "Lifetime Achievement Award" in Wright's own name.

It's not only the East Coast, but probably more prevelant among Jews there than Jews in other parts of the country. That's partly because the public as a whole on the East Coast tilts farther left and the MSM plays a greater role in fostering ignorance there by disinformation.

Nonetheless, Obama's background and history link him to the two statistically most antisemitic groups in the country: blacks and Moslems. You would have to figure that though he probably will get a majority of the Jewish vote nationally in the general election, his percentage will be significantly less than what 'Rats are accustomed to getting.

Exactly. Witness Bush's moment last week when he was all surprised at the price of gasoline. He sounded like he had no idea what its like out in the real world where regular Americans live. What a disappointment, to say the least.
