ScienceDaily (Feb. 27, 2008) — A mega-collision between two large embryonic planets could have created Venus as we know it, according to a new paper by a Cardiff University scientist.

Venus is a sister planet to Earth. It is nearly the same size and density yet it has a surface temperature of 720 K, an atmosphere dominated by carbon dioxide and no evidence of oceans or ridges. It has been described as “Earth’s evil twin”.

Dr Huw Davies, of the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences argues that a mega-collision could explain these differences. In particular the collision could explain why the interior of Venus is dry, the odd rotation of the planet and the carbon dioxide atmosphere.

Dr Davies of the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences said: “A collision theory has been explored by scientists previously but was abandoned as the planet Venus has no moon usually expected from such an impact. However, a mega-impact could have created Venus, since the head-on collision I propose does not produce a moon.”

The hot ball of gas and liquid that would result immediately following the collision would allow iron to react away the water, leaving Venus a dry planet. Significant suggested consequences of a dry planet include the lack of plate tectonics, continents and life.

Dr Davies’ research is published in the journal Earth and Planetary Science Letters.

Maybe it did. Take a look at Mercury.

The answer is, "Yes," and the planet responsible resembled an SUV.

Obviously, SUVs are to blame. And Bush, of course.

YHVH must be sitting up there laughing at people trying to use his creation as a means to disprove his existence.

Veliskovia (sp) said the ancients knew Venus as a comet. He had some pretty good theory about it all. He predicted a high temperature when textbooks taught it was about 70 deg. at the surface. When we got satellites up we found out he was right. I still remember how we were taught before that. Science wouldn’t accept his theory. Sitchen had some good books on it too. Claimed to have translated ancient languages. He’s still alive, I think.

Immanuel Velikovsky.

All of the planets hung out together.

Egyptians used to be able to go up to Saturn because it was so close that the gravity of Earth and Saturn cancelled each other out and you could fly there.

The crescent moon looms large in Arabic cultures because it is actually Saturn, not our measly moon with its tiny crescent.

The dinosaurs can only be explained by lower gravity due to the proximity of other large planets tending to lower our overall gravity. Else they would have been crushed under their own weight

Venus or some other planet got into some collision that caused all of the planets to scatter into their current orbits.

etc.

Does the guy mention the phase lock between Venus and Earth or try to provide any sort of a way that a collision with anything except Earth could have produced it?

Did A Mega-collision Alter Venus?

Venus, just like the Earth, did have a collison with another planet. That same planet that collided with Venus eventually ventured far enough form Venues and also crashed with the Earth. The remnants of that planet, now our moon, is slowly moving away from the earth and will eventually be close enough to Mars and another collision. And then, the remnast of that collision will eventually crash into Jupiter and that will be the end of that.

That's my theory and I'm sticking by it!

I don't know where you got all that stuff, but you didn't get it from anything Velikovsky wrote.

It was his New Age brother Ebenezer Velikovsky. Sorry.

No, global warming doomed Venus. Just look at all the carbon dioxide there!

Bush’s fault!

Remember one square a day (Crow’s Law). do it for Venus!

Here's the stuff I read. It's kinda cool as far as science fiction goes:

Ted Holden's Velikovsky Page

Here's a page with a quick description of why Holden is full of it (points up the bit about the dinosaurs):

VENUS used to be called “EN”, but then an SUV backed into it and the rest is astrophysics ...

The planets got into a big fist fight over who was gonna get the most Sun.

The ancients called it the “War of Heaven”.

Wonder who won?
