McCain Retools Immigration Stance
Associated Press ^ | February 27, 2008 | JULIE HIRSCHFELD DAVIS

Posted on 02/27/2008 12:37:03 PM PST by calcowgirl

WASHINGTON (AP) — John McCain faces a dilemma on immigration as he works to persuade conservatives he's tough enough on the issue without erasing his historic appeal to Hispanic voters.

Once a crusader for offering the nation's roughly 12 million undocumented immigrants a way to get legal status, McCain now says his first priority is fortifying U.S. borders.

The metamorphosis reflects McCain's intensifying effort to consolidate his support among conservatives, who deride the Arizona senator's past proposals on immigration as offering amnesty to lawbreakers, and bitterly resent his work with Democrats, including Sen. Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts, on the issue.

(snip)

Listen to McCain's speeches or look on his campaign web site now, and there's little mention of the fight to give illegal immigrants a way to stay in the U.S. lawfully. He instead emphasizes border security — the catch phrase of conservatives who scorned his earlier proposals.

It's a difference of emphasis, not a change in stance, Republican strategists say.

"He's in an excellent place with conservatives who are concerned about immigration, because his position — that he'll secure the border first and have that security certified by the border-state governors, and then we'll go back and deal with the 12 million — seems to have satisfied most people," said Charlie Black, a McCain adviser.

"He says, 'Look, we got the message — the American people do not trust us when we say we'll secure the border,'" Black added.

BS. He is fooling no one.

The time it took to read this article, another 500 illegals slipped across the border........

The McCain fools are in full pander mode, from him apologizing to his Democrat buddies and “Colleagues”, sucking up to the moderates, (Goebbels Warming) and trying to buffalo Conservatives with the WOT and the Borders.

It’s all lipstick on a pig, typical campaign rhetoric until the votes are cast. After that it’s business as usual or the lack thereof. SUCKERS!

I apologize to all the offended Illegal Aliens for what the mean, uncaring Republican John MeCain said today.

Sublime satire! Love it! Many thanks. :-)

McCain’s own state is smothered in Illegals. His own State only supports him by less than 50% of the vote, all those Mexicans who have flooded in here are giving 95% of their votes to the Democrats.

Since California allows open voting, no registration or I.D. required, drive-up voting stations, you bet that every illegal in the state are going out to vote for their hand-out giving Democrat.

The California legislature has raised gas taxes by over a dollar since Grey-out Davis was Governor. And now it is soon to be raised again......And McCain says nothing about this, nor does the press.

Look I in no way want the support of Bill Cunningham or any other bigots who think like him and I in no way will tolerate any disrespect toward Senators Clinton or Obama who I 100% agree with on every issue!

Nice impression of Juan McAmnesty! I can picture him saying precisely that...because, well, he pretty much did!

Neither “Hispanic” or “Mexican” are racial terms.

And 'illegal' isn't an ethnicity, but you claim our intentions of ejecting foreign invaders from our nation is "ethnic cleansing."

So, Mr. La Raza Hypocrite, what's your next maneuver? Claim that 'illegal' is a race and that we're all racists because we intend to enforce our nation's laws?

How is it that you critique America for it's immigration laws, but don't assail Mexico? After all, Mexico won't abide by any illegal alien in its borders. They won't allow them work, government benefits, or any of the things the illegals suck off our economy. So why are you such an anti-American, pro-Mexico jackhole?

McCain’s own state is smothered in Illegals.

Actually, that's changing...but no thanks to McCain. Thanks to the voter initiative that put in place the Employer Sanctions law (businesses lose their license for 10 days for knowingly hiring illegals...just on the first offense). Many illegals have begun to self-deport back to Mexico or they've left for California or Texas.

Being an Arizonan gives me a heightened level of disdain for Juan McAmnesty. Every anti-illegal movement that's been undertaken in this state (for its very survival) has been opposed by McCain on a national level. It's obscene, I tell ya...just obscene.

I seriously want to know what the next strategy should be for everyone throughout the U.S. who is truly pro-law abiding when it comes to everything involving illegal immigration? Hillary, Obama, McCain, and too many politicians in Congress as well as from within every political level are pro-amnesty for illegal immigrants despite a majority of people throughout the U.S. who truly are against all forms of amnesty for illegal immigrants as well as for fully resolving all of the ongoing problems throughout the U.S. as they are related to illegal immigration! What’s the next move for everyone who truly is anti-amnesty for illegal immigrants?

I left a message at his campaign headquarters stating that our dogs are more intelligent. At least they know better than to bite the hands that feed them.

Every time I think I have convinced myself that I can vote for McCain, someone brings up Juan Hernandez or related amnesty/illegal issues, and I'm right back where I started.

I will probably make my final decision while standing in front of the ballot.

“It’s a difference of emphasis, not a change in stance”

I don't know if he got the memo. All changes in stance are now being forwarded to Larry Craig.

Boy when it comes to immigration all the usual McCain apologists are
AWOL...wonder where they are??? They know he (McCain) is a lost cause
on this issue, and the insults they toss out don’t work, so they sit
on the sidelines drinking McKoolaid. This dog won’t hunt and by
November it will not matter.
