Random panic does seem to be in play
in the area:

http://criticalmiami.com/2008/02/26/the-whole-area-is-without-power

“People are trapped in elevators, traffic is at a standstill, and there are crazy thunderstorms all over the place. Turkey Point is down. I’m pleased to report that power has been restored on the Beach, though, and never lost it here in Hollywood. Anyone have anything interesting to report? Update: Early reports have the problem stemming from the main power lines leaving TP.”

And the blog has one hysterical woman waving people
to get out of the area.

MIAMI — A small hole was found in a pipe at the Turkey Point Nuclear Power Plant, and now officials are trying to determine if the hole was drilled accidentally or deliberately.”

Wonder what ever happened with this investigation back in 2006?

“It’s a credit to our infrastructure and the men and women running it that we don’t see this everyday.”

I agree. Although we do have powerfailures here pretty regularly in summer. After Charley the local grid was improved a bit but a well aimed lightening strike can knock out a section or two.

Geez. I just heard on Cavuto we have FEMA called in. The peoples and hombres of South Dade will gladly line up for a check. This is nuts.

A spokeswoman for FPL Group Inc, the main energy provider in south Florida, said the company’s Turkey Point nuclear reactor in Florida shut down due to the loss of off-site power but would not elaborate on the cause of the outage. Other power companies were also affected.

“I don’t know the cause of the outage,” Stone told Reuters, saying authorities were awaiting an update from FPL. “There was a failure within the FPL system,” he said.

Officials in Washington said there were no signs of a link to terrorism.

“There is no indication of a nexus to terrorism at this time ... we will continue to monitor,” U.S. Homeland Security Department spokeswoman Laura Keehner said.

Large cascades are rare like the one in Ohio a few years ago, System operators do an excellent job for the most part, but trips due to transients are common, system configuration. I have lost units because of very strange system happenings such as a guy who tried to make love to a 345 KV line in a switch yard.

Thanks...

My radio has been erratic, but other than the Power Company activating the turn off on power to the pool, hot water etc. no other problems.

I see I am in the zone, but the map does not show south Florida, so I must assume it is a secondary power shortage.

Weather radio screaming tornado warnings every few minutes too...what a day!

I lost my home in Andrew, and remember
some stories. This seems to be a credible
report of what happened there then.

Okaaaaay.

Well, I just spoke to Mr. Mew. Considering we're talking about FL, he was all ready to blame gators. Hmmmm, then again, who knows.

Looks like a transformer in a substation failed and some generation had to be shut down. When there is a reduction in load there has to be a reduction in supply. No big deal. Unless you are driving in Miami?.
