Florida Power & Light is reporting massive power outages throughout South Florida, including Miami, Doral, Westchester, and Pembroke Pines. Reports of outages extended into Palm Beach, an FPL spokeswoman said.
The company said it was investigating the problem.

Spoke to my friend in Boynton Beach just
awhile before the power outtage. She said
it was really hot and humid. I know there’s
been an unseasonable heat wave back there
in my old home state, and today’s issue
could very likely be due to the excess
electrical useage for air conditioning,
fans, etc.
Large Generators have over voltage and under voltage relays to protect the unit from these little buggers, big enough hit your out.

We are a bit spoiled. Power outages in other countries are pretty routine.
It’s a credit to our infrastructure and the men and women running it that we don’t see this everyday.
In Mexico or anywhere in Africa, this wouldn’t even be newsworthy.

Seriously, my small corner of Pasco has some nasty looking clouds starting to roll in. Very windy also.......... we should be rocking & rolling in a little while!
Actually it is not a strange grid. A major outage can cause power swings that can affect frequency, 60cps, and cascade into outages across the whole state or further. In order to prevent that there are relays set up for frequency that goes below the 60cps. They are set up in stages and dropping load will stabilize the problem.
So you can have isolated outages at pretty long distances from the original problem. However those are usually restored very quickly after the system stabilizes.
It's a safety feature to prevent wide and long outages.

Well- it’s certainly unlikely that he is/was directly connected. But it’s interesting to consider that taking down a nearby sub-station through hacking or similar- would then result in tripping the nuke plants.

Exactly. Blow a big transformer at a substation and you got juice with no place to go. Got to trip the generators off line. That puts too much drain elsewhere and vola cascades. This all looks rare but not hard to explain.
Oddly enough, here in the Tampa Bay area, it’s been overcast all day, and comfortable enough to have the windows and doors open today. Of course, the rough weather in the hours ahead will usher in a welcome cold front. Temps into the 45º tomorrow night. Yippee!

Maybe jsut a precaution due to what’s going on in Florida. The big Northeast blackout spread far and wide, and I don’t think the power transmission bigwigs have a huge level of confidence that something like that can’t be repeated. If anything did start to happen in the NY grid, they’d look awfully stupid if they’d sent everybody home on schedule while the Florida situation still wasn’t under control.
Well, the power is still on in upper east Tennessee. Life is good. :)
