As I said earlier- it may be something simple that went wrong and all the safeguards worked. The problem may be that a helicopter saw black smoke coming from around the Turkey Point area a day or two ago...

The PIO for Turkey Point just said an equipment malfunction occured ... ROFLMAO!!!!!!!!

FPL just said a sub-station tripped. That would backload the generation plant and trip it. That would cause a big drain on the rest of the grid and that would take them down also. No big deal. More surprised it does not happen more often.

They were showing live coverage from WSVN that I can’t get to load, the helicopter reporter said that they flew over the Turkey Point Power Plant 2 days ago and noticed odd smoke coming from one of the buildings there. He said that some imigrants had come to shore there also.

>> One is reporting similar problems in New York City

As far as school stuff, I don’t know - but just spoke with a family member who is a facility electrician at a power plant near Westchester County NY, they have nothing in-house about generation/supply issues anywhere in NY.

This facility does supply energy across Long Island and they are “in the loop” so to speak.

He only added that they (electricians, engineers and mechanics) are on unscheduled overtime and didn’t say why - and no eta in when they’re getting out. Probably nothing to do with down south though.

Sounds like your office mate’s daughter is a hearty soul with a keen sense of humor. That will get her through this.

We know from experience all these years never take these things lightly. but we know how apathetic & braindead midstream America has become

The site at Progress Energy was really slow (overloaded.) Each color triangle specified a different level of outage, small medium or large, but each site on the map lists all three. I don’t know what it represents beyond that.

somehow connected to the guy who tried to flee police from Miami International airport yesterday

I find that hard to believe. Taking down a nuclear power plant would be a serious professional job. The MIA runner/jumper and his 2 friends were most likely just small time drug runners, but if they had any terrorist aspirations at all, they were rank amateurs.

They made a long list of stupid mistakes to the point where getting pulled out for closer inspection was virtually guaranteed. At least the one who got caught initially (and maybe the others too) was a young male with an Arab name, so a close-watch target to begin with. Then one guy (not runner-jumoer guy) bought last-minute tickets for 3 people taking 2 different flights, the guy who got caught was carrying multiple ID documents from multiple countries in his bag, and just in case the security crew needed extra help in figuring out that he needed to be "pulled aside", he had cocaine in his bag. Cocaine, at MIA, a major drug entry point, with drug detection operations to match. And then when he got pulled aside, he made the brilliant decision to launch himself over a 25 foot high concourse edge onto the concrete below, like this was actually a way to escape a crowded airport when you've already got security chasing after you and a thousand heads turned your way.

Of course, I suppose it's possible that every word that authorities have put out about that incident was false, and part of a cover-up story, but given that it seems to jive well with witness accounts, I rather doubt that.

Last time we had a huge power outage in the US, it was due to the operational failures of our home-grown power grid professionals.
