NEW YORK (AP) - For many black Americans, it's a conversation they find hard to avoid, revisiting old fears in the light of bright new hopes. They watch with wonder as Barack Obama moves ever closer to becoming America's first black president. And they ask themselves, their family, their friends: Is he at risk? Will he be safe?
There is, of course, no sure answer. But interviews with blacks across the country, prominent and otherwise, suggest that lingering worries are outweighed by enthusiasm and determination.
"You can't have lived through the civil rights movement and know something about the history of African-Americans in this country and not be a little concerned," said Edna Medford, a history professor at Washington's Howard University.
"But African-Americans are more concerned that Obama get the opportunity to do the best he can," she added. "And if he wins, most of us believe the country would do for him what it would do for any president, that he will be as well protected as any of them."

And I sure as hell would make sure that every Secret Service agent on Obama's detail has not the slightest connection past or present to Hillary or Bill Clinton.
I imagine they are already on the payroll. It might well be that some are names we already know that are famous for other things.
We are at a place in time where it would be better for America if Obama or Hillary were not elected. However, if the general public has reason to view Conservatives as a group that believes that Hillary will march the masses off to a gas chamber and Obama as one that will kill all whites and Christians, the GOP Ticket will go down in flames.
All I am saying is that it is important to be realistic and not introduce hyperbole that makes us look like a paranoid fringe.
With McCain being a done deal, I think many Republicans and Independents who despise Hillary have voted in the Dem primaries for Obama. I'm planning to switch my registration and vote for Obama in the Dem primary here (and vote against him in the general election)
His skin color is not why people dislike him, it is his leftist ideology.
I predicted many months ago that this would be a race baiting misery tour in 2008 with the dem candidates.
Its been amusing watching the guilt ridden liberals oscillating back and forth because its between a woman and a black man. Completely petrified over how to be politically correct. Whatever..........
I knew it was only a matter of time before the Obama supporters started full press race baiting articles about how Obama would have to worry about his life or that in the end, he loses because he was black.
My mom, the lifetime democrat (ouch, I know) was telling me on the phone last night the details of her at the dem caucus on Oahu and how the race baiters where out in full effect claiming that Obama won’t win texas because he’s black. blah-blah-blah. She also said their main focus was attack McCain claiming he’ll start new wars. She also dropped this whopper on me, “The military all want out of Iraq.”

Have any blacks seen the 1.6 million dollar home that Obama lives in. Obama is about as black as Bill Clinton - hell BC is probably more black than Barack.
If I were black I would be worried as hell - Aren’t Black Muslims persecuting Black Christians somewhere in the world? Selling them into slavery, murdering them in some place called Darfur?
