NEW YORK (AP) - For many black Americans, it's a conversation they find hard to avoid, revisiting old fears in the light of bright new hopes. They watch with wonder as Barack Obama moves ever closer to becoming America's first black president. And they ask themselves, their family, their friends: Is he at risk? Will he be safe?
There is, of course, no sure answer. But interviews with blacks across the country, prominent and otherwise, suggest that lingering worries are outweighed by enthusiasm and determination.
"You can't have lived through the civil rights movement and know something about the history of African-Americans in this country and not be a little concerned," said Edna Medford, a history professor at Washington's Howard University.
"But African-Americans are more concerned that Obama get the opportunity to do the best he can," she added. "And if he wins, most of us believe the country would do for him what it would do for any president, that he will be as well protected as any of them."

“Which groups of Americans would Hillary kill to top 26,000,000?”
The ones who didn’t vote for her.
“She’s dead, she doesn’t think?”
Excuse me, I just took it for granted that everyone on FR believed in the afterlife. LMAO
So according to you, his mother no longer exists after death.
“You’re really not very good at covering up your blatant racism?”
It has NOTHING to do with “racism”
It has to do with the FACT that Obama and others are trying to label him a “black” when less than a quarter of his ancestry is black.
It has to do with “truth in labeling.”
Let us know when you “get it!” LMAO
First, I was just worried about his tax and spend mentality, which could make things very uncomfortable for the hard-working among us, but when I started seeing that he is very anti-Israel, voted against the FISA bill to protect our telecommunications companies from litigation, and some other issues, I am now beginning to wonder where his loyalties are as well. I have heard some say McCain is a wolf in sheep’s clothing but I have a strong feeling that it is Obama who is the wolf. He’s like the Pied Piper of Hamlin.
Many AMERICANS worry about America's safety if Obama becomes president!
and if you had ever been incarcerated,
you would know there are many more racist Hispanics & Blacks...
In Texas, that would not be a smart move, here the 'burbs are almost as heavily armed as the rural areas.
“If he manages to get over the Clintoon Machine I think you are wrong. Take a look at the Dem turnout in the Primaries - Over two and sometimes three times the Rep turnout. Couple that with a geriatric Washington Insider who has limited support from his base and who will be hounded continuously by the MSM based on things hes done as an Insider and IMO you have got a recipe for a Landslide - By Obama.”
Dem turnout surpassed GOP turnout in 1980 and 1988, too. The thing here is that the Democratic primaries have shown that, lo and behold, Obama does in fact have a race and age problem. Even in states like California and Maryland most whites voted for Obama. More recently, I know that more whites have been voting for him, but probably more due to Clinton’s collapsing campaign than anything else. Just look at his poor performance with Hispanics, too, and that gives McCain an opening with that substantial constituency.
Secondly, in state after state, the age gap has been very pronounced with Obama losing the senior vote - often by vast margins. Seniors are a critical constituency and this is an area where Senator McCain’s age could benefit him. The point is that older voters (particularly 65 and older) are less likely to be swayed by Obama’s eloquent, yet empty message.
I think it will be completely in the toilet by November and this will add more impetus to the willingness of the Pipples to jump on the Dem BS. Heck, from what I can tell, it's being held together with Band-Aids now and the proposals being tossed out now promise more, not less, uncertainty and will likely deepen the problems.
I can't imagine Obama feels comfortable in any event.
Based on past riots, the Inner City Blacks will riot against everything, loot and burn their own stores and homes and kill each other at a faster rate than they are already doing.
An Obama death would just be a pretext to run amok, just like it was in the past. IMO The only difference would be the severity and duration. The perpetrators of such an act would, as usual, continue to live well in their gated communities and well secured homes still pressing the buttons of power.
Well, the plain fact is that in certain parts of certain Cities there is danger just getting out of your car to pump gas. The other, omitted fact in this piece is that the perpetrator has about a 90% chance of being Black and the victim is also likely to be a Black.
Taking her statement literally she is saying that Obama's greatest risk comes from other Blacks and not some White KKK type.
I don’t know why blacks are so concerned about this. If you listen to the Drive By Media, if the Obamunist died, he’d just be back in three days anyway.
That was my first thought also -- then I remembered that these two are very high-income people. They are not living in a tenement and likely had never lived in such surroundings.
What did she really mean? Apparently the statement was in response to the question, are you concerned about the possibility of your husband being assassinated?
It is IMO accurate to say that the gas station answer was a way of saying "No because life is full of danger for some." It was an impromptu remark that conveyed her feelings about matters (plural).
To wit, it also tends to reveal her thinking on race relations, even for her at her economic level. Even if she answered for "the typical black man in a high crime area" her husband is no "typical black man" and in no way faces those day-to-day dangers.
So, in her upper class, mostly white free-of-persistent-crime neighborhood how should going to the gas station be more dangerous for a black man than for a white man? Is she saying that like "the typical black man in a high crime area" her husband faces the same danger in a mostly white free-of-persistent-crime neighborhood? If so, why so? Only one answer IMO, he's black and almost everyone else is not.
About the gas pump thing - If she thinks a Black man has an equal probability of being a victim everywhere she is just plain wrong. The stats I’ve seen bear this out. As well, the perps of this sort of ‘Street Crime’ are overwhelmingly Black.
These are facts that the Race Pimps conveniently forget along with the reasons that Blacks are the largest population in prison, way out of proportion to their percent of Society, having arrived there in very large part from Black on Black crime.
I agree. I've just started reading her Princeton thesis. Other comments about her experience at Princeton IMO confirm the oft-expressed opinion that liberals (i.e., her fellow students and the employees of Princeton) are far more race-aware than conservatives. They never let her forget and just be a student, I bet.
In general, as long as the "victim of America" industry remains lucrative there will always be one.
