A statement by the Archbishop of San Antonio, Texas, criticizing Hillary Clinton's speech and rally on a Catholic college campus because of her pro-abortion stance is being cheered by some Catholics and dismissed by others.
In a Feb. 12 statement about Clinton's campaign stop at St. Mary's University, Archbishop Jose Gomez, said: "The Catholic bishops of the United States, in their 2004 document Catholics in Political Life, affirmed that when dealing with political candidates and public office holders, 'The Catholic community and Catholic institutions should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles. They should not be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions.'"
"Our Catholic institutions must promote the clear understanding of our deep moral convictions on an issue like abortion, an act that the church calls 'an unspeakable crime' and a non-negotiable issue," Gomez said.
"I think Archbishop Gomez is a courageous shepherd," the Rev. Terence Henry, president of Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ohio, told Cybercast News Service.
Henry said Catholics must support politicians based on what the politician believes.
"Clearly, promoting abortion is contrary to Catholic teaching," Henry said. "A Catholic must order their values according to a hierarchy of values and at the top of that hierarchy is the dignity of human life."
Rev. Frank Pavone, national director of Priests for Life, said that a presidential candidate who supports abortion or embryonic stem cell research can't be the choice of a Catholic.
"Voters may not morally protect the so-called right to abortion in any way," Pavone told Cybercast News Service. "Therefore, they may not vote for a pro-abortion candidate.
"The destruction of embryos in the name of research, of course, has to also be opposed," Pavone said, adding that voters should choose a candidate who would be the least destructive when it comes to human life.
Repeated inquires for comment on this issue to Catholics for Choice were not returned by press time.
Henry said, based on Franciscan University's policy, Clinton would most likely not be invited to speak on campus.
"The (policy) says, 'The president of Franciscan University reserves the right to deny approval for any guest speaker whose appearance or remarks, in the judgment of the president, would compromise the university's mission or promote propositions and values contrary to Catholic teaching.'"
Er.....no.
Either Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton or John McCain will be the next president of the United States. That much is certain. This is the reality with which we are faced.
All of them would do some form of damage to this country. The question is; who will do the least?
Choose that person and vote for him/her. The Church has always recognized the moral legitimacy of this position.
“What about Catholics who practice other prohibited methods of birth control like the “pill,” I.U.D’s or diaphragms?”
So there is no difference between using a condom and having a baby’s brains sucked out and his body thrown in a red bag? Or any Cathoilc who ever used an IUD can never again vote pro life? Pleeeeeeeeeeze!
Wrong. None of these mentioned in the article would wine and dine with that crowd.
Some leaders in the Catholic church would, but not these fine men.
Too bad Gomez isn’t as staunch an adherent to Church teaching when it comes to aiding, abetting and enabling illegal aliens.
So why do half of the Catholics consistently vote for Democrats????
Why must we muddy the waters on this one???
SURELY you know the differnce between GOD'S LAW and MAN's law....don't you? Fr. Gomez does also.
2241 The more prosperous nations are obliged, to the extent they are able, to welcome the foreigner in search of the security and the means of livelihood which he cannot find in his country of origin. Public authorities should see to it that the natural right is respected that places a guest under the protection of those who receive him.
Political authorities, for the sake of the common good for which they are responsible, may make the exercise of the right to immigrate subject to various juridical conditions, especially with regard to the immigrants' duties toward their country of adoption. Immigrants are obliged to respect with gratitude the material and spiritual heritage of the country that receives them, to obey its laws and to assist in carrying civic burdens.
“Why must we muddy the waters on this one???”
Why not?
I’d say it got pretty muddy in the religious war over Romney.
Seems to me that a Hypocrite is a Hypocrite, regardless of it’s flavor.
“Rev. Frank Pavone, national director of Priests for Life, said that a presidential candidate who supports abortion or embryonic stem cell research can’t be the choice of a Catholic.”
This rules out Obama, Clinton, and McCain.
For some strange reason McCain recently decided to throw his hat in support of embryonic stem cell research despite its repeated failures and despite the proven success of adult stem cell research.
For the same reason half of the country consistently votes for democrats. It’s a cross section.
Until the Catholic Church excommunicates the likes of Kennedy and Kerry I will not believe them if they say the sun comes up in the east.
Keep kissing abortion supporters asses especially if they contribute loads to the church
Archbishop Gomez (since Huckabee spoke last night at the same Catholic University as Hillary)said that Huckabee’s positions on life issues-abortion and embryonic stem cells is in line with Catholic teaching. He had no problem with Huckabee speaking at St. Mary’s University.
I was just trying to get a *rise* out of you.
I know the score... carry on.
“The Church has always recognized the moral legitimacy of this position.”
Please explain?
In general the Church considers this a form of sacrilege, while abortion is taking a human life, but you likely knew that.
One, the killing of an unborn child, violates God’s law. Two, the use of birh controll violates catholic tradition...wich I dont have a care for....nor does the Word of God.
I don't condone abortion. It is a gruesome procedure no matter what the stage of pregnancy. What I wanted to point out is the hypocrisy of the church's position. Condemn abortion, yes, but allow Catholics to practice all other forms of birth control. This is especially important for central American Catholics, most of whom strictly adhere to church teaching.
Allow? It is not allowed. It is viewed as intrinsically evil.
