TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) -- John McCain denied a romantic relationship with a female telecommunications lobbyist on Thursday and said a report by The New York Times suggesting favoritism for her clients is "not true."
"I'm very disappointed in the article. It's not true," the likely Republican presidential nominee said as his wife, Cindy, stood alongside him during a news conference called to address the matter.
McCain described the woman in question, lobbyist Vicki Iseman, as a friend.
The newspaper quoted anonymous aides as saying they had urged McCain and Iseman to stay away from each other prior to his failed presidential campaign in 2000. In its own follow-up story, The Washington Post quoted longtime aide John Weaver, who split with McCain last year, as saying he met with lobbyist Iseman and urged her to steer clear of McCain.

The bigger story is not sex, but influence peddling. McCain wrote two letters to the FCC on behalf of the firm his alleged paramour represented. For someone who has cloaked himself in being a reformer and against special interests, this is especially damaging.
Going the same path in my opinion. But Bob Bennett did an excellent job giving the facts.
Moreover, this slanderous hype was kicked around for months and the “New Republic” pushed the NYTIMES.
These are SLIME MAGNETS. They aren’t true news affiliates.
The scurrilous accusations have started and let’s see how many from the right will allow themselves to partake in this malevolent attack on Senator McCain?

It is obvious that the NY Times, renown for its blatant bias against all things that even hint of conservatism, is performing a hatchet job on McCain. Anonymous sources are not the stuff of front page stories on the NY Timesthe National Enquirer, maybe, but not the NY Times. Will the NY Times now be headlining stories about the rumored lesbian relationship between Hillary Clinton and her aide, Huma Abedin? Will the NY Times be splashing the Larry Sinclair allegations about a gay encounter with Barack Obama on its front page?
Diddled by the dangling dong of destiny and f**ked by the fickle finger of fate!
I am glad that mods corrected your smear addition to the headline.
twas practice. ;^)
“exactly... Rumor published like it is fact...”
Everyone keeps calling it a smear job. I don’t see it that way. The NYT quotes several ex-staff members as being concerned about a lobbyist too close to their Senator and how to handle it. Several meetings, trips together, corporate jets, they identify the women by name. Those are facts. Granted the sources are anonymous, but why has McCain hired a lawyer? - and the HIGHEST PROFILE attorney in Washington (Bill Bennett). He hasn’t called for a retraction, he hasn’t demanded an apology, he’s acting guilty. It’s a story because the Republican Party expects more out of it’s candidates. If he’s willing to lie to his wife and kids, the voters don’t have a chance.
actually if you have the resources to prevent a lie it makes total sense.
Sadly this is just pointing out the difference between R and D.
D = free pass
R = full court lie press.
The thing is, it (a) doesn’t have to be an actual story, just a hint or innendo, and (b) doesn’t have to have so much as a smidgen of truth to it. By the time the proof shows up that it’s untrue (if that happens), it’s too late. Everyone has already accepted the lie as part of “common knowledge.” (See: “Bush lied, people died” as an example of this.) If a retraction appears at all, it will be buried in the back pages.

Don’t worry. Everyone knows that a highly respected rag like The NYT wouldn’t print something they hadn’t checked out and sources vetted thoroughly...So, all the defense of McAmnesty right now from Buchanan to Scarborough to the leftist pimps and whores and all the freepers who love Psycho McCain is going to be for naught. The truth behind this story WILL come out, and it won’t be good news for “My friends” McLame!
Very similar to my sarcastic response whenever Kerry's military record was mentioned -
John Kerry served in Vietnam? Wow, hadn't heard that! Did he get any medals?
Oh, please. I wonder how many people who voted for McCain in the primaries said, "Well, I was going to vote for FRed, but that lukewarm endorsement for McCain in the NY Times made me change my mind!"
Well said, my FRiend.
I have to disagree with you. It’s not that the story is poorly sources. In fact, it’s quite well-sourced with two anonymous sources and one named source for confirmation. The real question is what’s revealed here: that McCain was close to a lobbyist and his staff did their jobs and stepped in to put a stop to it. To paraphrase Stein: there’s no there there.
During the Republican primaries, the MSM was focused on knocking down more conservative contenders in favor of McCain. Now that McCain has knocked out all the other Republican contenders, it's time for the MSM to knock HIM down in favor of the Dem candidate
An accidental slip of the tongue... NOT! I believe it was a deliberate attempt to further smear McCain.
For purposes of full disclosure... I am NOT a McCain fan!
What did you expect? You're talking about the New York Times, f'cryin'out loud!
Why demand a retraction? All you're going to get is more propaganda. Merely point out the similarities between the New York Times and any propaganda organ--Pravda under the Soviets, for example--or German newspapers under Adolf Hitler.
Does anybody believe what these propaganda rags publish???
Kind of like the old saying, One Must Never Plan Ahead.
