This has been a setup from the start. Endorse the most liberal, least electable candidate from the opposing party and, when he is assured nomination, take the dagger to him.

Oh, please. I wonder how many people who voted for McCain in the primaries said, "Well, I was going to vote for FRed, but that lukewarm endorsement for McCain in the NY Times made me change my mind!"

Kind of like the old saying, One Must Never Plan Ahead.

The NYT endorsement was on January 25, 2008 despite the fact that they were working on the McCain story in December 2007 and McCain had hired Bennett in December to spike the story. My take on the endorsement was to split the Rep party knowing full well that conservatives would see such an endorsement as a negative before Super Tuesday.

Now that McCain is the presumptive nominee, the NYT can destroy him and leave the GOP holding the bag.

The NYT (which leads the networks) and all other liberal rags has enormous influence, as a matter of fact I would argue they are omnipresent, and actually run this country.

Press coverage of candidates provides all context, impressions, perceptions, and momentum. It colors all speeches, decisions, policies, behavior, political ads, etc.

The “big mo” nominated McCain and Oprah’s Kid.

And the “biggest mo” are the NYT bathhouse boys.
