McCain? No Way!
by Sen. HL "Bill" Richardson (ret.)
Chairman of the Board, GOA

Americans are being told by the mainstream media that conservatives have no other choice than to back the hypocrite from Arizona. All that is required is to pretend he is "really" a conservative. "So, crawl under the big Republican tent and vote for McCain," we are told. "Besides, what other choice do you have?"

We have plenty of choices, none of which calls for casting our vote for the lesser of two presidential evils.

First, the Republican race isn't over. Huckabee is still around and as Kansas and Louisiana should point out, the Romney vote flocked to Huckabee. Not that they loved Huckabee, but that they have zero trust in the promises of McCain. Even if Huckabee loses, what makes anyone think conservatives will vote for McCain?

Don't you liberals get it? The republican conservative believes McCain would be a vindictive president. He's proven his dislike for conservatives and would gut us at every opportunity.

Why do I say that? Because of three decades of experience as a Republican California Senator and a fifty year activist in the conservative movement. I have first hand, in-their-face experience with elitist RINO's (Republican in Name Only) office holders. They are biblically ignorant, power hungry, status seeking egotists who have no difficulty aiding their liberal Democrat colleagues whenever their arms are politely twisted. The one thing they have in common with liberal Democrats is their dislike of all conservatives, especially those who are Bible-believing. McCain, as president, would stifle the voices of elected Republican leaders and try to legislate the conservative movement out of existence.

There is no reason why any conservative should be depressed, especially if they look at past history. I clearly remember the political climate in 1964. We newly-awakened conservatives had a real friend running for the Republican nomination. Barry Goldwater defeated a liberal Republican in the primaries, but in the general election, the mainstream media slaughtered him. In 1964 it was easy to do; we had no effective political action committees, no conservative organizations, few pro-life activists, little religious participation, no talk radio, a handful of articulate conservative legislators, no fax machines and zero Internet. After the 1964 November election, all looked hopeless. Not a bright star on the horizon....But!

In 1966, we conservatives elected an actor as Governor of California. I was elected to the State Senate. The thespian and I were greener than grass but we were both quick to learn. Ron Reagan became a national star, a conservative leader in the nation’s most popular state. He couldn't be ignored.

I founded Gun Owners of America and Gun Owners of California. We became the second largest pro-Second Amendment organization in America with membership in the hundreds of thousands. We concentrated our efforts on electing pro-gunners to the legislature and stopping anti-gun legislation. We grew rapidly and were quite successful. During liberal Jerry Brown's eight years as governor, not a single anti-gun bill was signed into law. The reason was simple -- although the liberal Democrats controlled both houses of the legislature, no anti-gun legislation passed from either house to find its way to the Governor’s desk.

The entire gun movement is close to accomplishing that feat on a national level. As long as the gun community hangs together, it will make little difference on gun issues who is sitting in the White House. The same could be true of other major conservative organizations as long as they stay in the fight. We are much better off than in 1964 and much better organized.

The other good news is that some of the weak-sister Republicans are leaving office -- not willing to scrap it out with the liberal Democrats. Hooray, happy to see you go! Call Gun Owners if you need a ride out of town. We have an opportunity to replace them with tough, no nonsense conservatives. Already, some very fine men are seeking these vacancies.

We at Gun Owners intend to be very engaged in Congressional and US Senate races.

I personally will not cast a vote for the presidency -- that is, if McCain is the Republican nominee. Under no circumstances will I vote for either of the Democrats. This will be the first time in fifty years that I have made this choice. I hope it will be the last.

“I would go for that. Much better to have a clearly defined adversary. McCain only serves to divide the party, Obama would unite us.”

Dittos! He will not only divide the party, he diminish the Conservative membership by taking it so far to the left that the majority will be more like the Dems than the party of Reagan and Goldwater.

I know H.L. He’s the real deal. It was his generation of elected officials that gave us Ronald Reagan. Unfortunately they are almost all gone now.

I figured some folks might remember him, hence the ping. He sounds like one of the good guys.

Allow me to summarize the article: OBAMA IN 08!

This is a tired old argument we heard over and over again in the 2003 California gubernatorial Recall. We were told a vote against Arnold was a vote for Democrat Cruz Bustamante. Well guess what? We got a governor MORE liberal than Bustamante. Additionally he has set out to destroy the Republican party from within. He very effectively thwarted the elections of prominent conservatives in 2006, and he continues to do massive collateral damage with his borrow and spend, spend, spend big government policies while claiming to be a "Republican".

To hell with McCain. We've been through it before.

This is one of those instances where I don't want to be right. I don't even want to think I'm right. But observations of the past, present, and "predictable" future pretty much tell us what's going to happen. So we might as well deal with it. :-)

There are too many people who simply refuse to support the leftist turd. They'll sit out (hope they don't!), or write-in.

Translation: They supporting the socialist party this year. OBAMA in 08. What they refuse to do is make a rational choice. Their feelings are hurt, and so they're going to engage in self-injury and help give the socialists a mandate to lead with a willing Congress.

Perhaps the denial of GOP-Bots and McCainiacs won't kick in until after 04 Nov 2008.

Childish name calling. Shocking. What you call bots and maniacs are the rational ones.

But eventually, they'll have to come to terms with us, and our refusal to vote for another "second best".

I can only speak for myself, but I've already come to terms with your intentions, and the likely result. When we have a charasmatic socialist President Obama, with a mandate, a gushing press, and a willing congress, we'll have you folks to thank for it, because you simply couldn't use your noggins but instead chose emotionalism at your own peril.

McCain isn't even close to second best. He's just a turd who won't flush. I'm in complete amazement that he's probably going to become the GOP nominee.

In the coming general election, he will clearly be the better choice. No question about it. I am also surprised he won, but he did it fair and square. Hell, I'm still surprised the D-Backs beat the Yanks in 01, but stuff happens. Get over it.

Now it's your turn...go ahead and tell me how there's no difference between us and Hillary supporters...and how we're going to screw everything up...and how we're all a bunch of trolls, or traitors..narrowminded...or just plain crazy people.

You're not trolls, or traitors, or even crazy. You're just wrong. You're deeply frustrated and pissed, you feel powerless, and you find McCain even more distasteful than the usual GOP mediocrity. And so you're throwing a loud fit, hoping it will have an impact, howling against the results of the primary season. But in the end, if you fail to make the better choice in the general, you do in FACT help deliver a socialist President Obama with a mandate to lead and a willing congress. It's frustrating, but true.

To hell with McCain. We've been through it before.

The consequence of which is: OBAMA in 08--a charismatic Socialist with a mandate and a willing Congress. It's not a "tired old argument." It's not even an argument. It's an indisputable fact. If you prefer OBAMA, fine, just say so.

Check your meds, and remember this, there’s still a war going on,

Let's talk about that war. If you have to take your meds in order to answer the question I am about to put to you, do so, because I want the truth:

IS THERE ANY HONOR IN SENDING OUR BOYS TO DIE FOR THIS?

Article 2: First: Islam is the official religion of the State and it is a fundamental source of legislation:.. No law that contradicts the established provisions of Islam may be established
That's something like fighting WWII so that we can kill Hitler and let fascism stand.

Republicans and Neo-Cons: Wars are NOT about securing trade agreements. They are about killing enemies and colonizing them if you have to. Wake up. We aren't NATION-BUILDING over there. We are taking it in the shorts from the Saudi religious police, who won't let us tell Iraq "we're not going to fight for your 8th century, child-molesting prophet."

If you think John McCAin has the testicals to understand basic truths, you really are just as bad a soldier as he is.

[Schwarzenegger] has set out to destroy the Republican party from within. He very effectively thwarted the elections of prominent conservatives in 2006, and he continues to do massive collateral damage ...

And McCain will bring it to a national level.

Just looking at what his Reform Institute, funded and staffed by prominent leftists (yes, Soros and others), has been doing in the way of immigration "reform," election laws, campaign finance, "climate stewardship," and others should set off the alarm for all conservatives and Republicans.

The consequence of your wishes is an Arnold Schwarzenegger at a national level. There will be no organized conservative movement left when captain Queeg is finished with us. Hillary and Obama don’t have that power. They can’t destroy the conservative movement from within. McCain can. Is that what you want? fine, just say so.

In my left hand I hold a steamy pile of shit. In my right hand, I hold a steamy pile of shit. According to the GOP, one steamy pile is better than the other. Or, if you would rather, less disgusting than the other.

I've dropped both piles, have cleaned my hands and will act in accordance with my conscience.

You're not convincing anybody here, but there is probably some therapeutic value for you to be in denial. So spar away and at least "feel" better. We're here for ya. :-)

This is politics. You have primaries. Someone wins. Then you get two choices and pick one. The rest is apple sauce.

Whats needed is facing reality..

I agree.

or the Partys done for..

Nonsense.

The base has been POLITICALLY RAPED..

No it hasn't. The base failed to field a candidate who had motivation, money, and skill. Elections were held. The results are in. That's life. You act as if it's the first time you ever lost a primary.

And WILL NOT honor the rapist and his supporters.. You know... like George Soros

Because clearly Soros has no interest in OBAMA winning with a sizable mandate. Naaaah, he'd hate that.

If we're going to lose the coming Presidential election to the left (and we ARE), then I would prefer to lose HONORABLY. I won't be counted with cowards who vote out of fear, only to lose and then lament the fact that I committed the immoral act of voting for a terrible leftist panderer like McCain.

I prefer a different viewpoint. November has many races. We should invest resources in the Presidential race only if, and to the extent, that our investment forces the Democrats to invest more. In some cases there can be honor in fighting a losing battle (especially if fighting costs the opponent more than it does us). There is, however, no special honor in wasting resources on a losing battle that could have been better spent elsewhere.
