A very good friend of mine is in urgent need of prayers. She is faced with a pregnancy that will not survive and will probably kill her. Her baby is developing with it's brain out side of it's skull. Her doctor has told her she needs to abort the baby as soon as possible as there is evidently some risk to herself as well. I know that there are many prayer warriors here at FR so I turned to you.
Thank you in advance for the prayers.
I am unsure how to get to everyone with this update ping. I have no ping list so can you help with this.
My friend, Tiffany, has seen two specialists and apparently the encephalocele is located at the forehead. 90% of the baby’s brain is outside of the skull. There is very little hope of surviving any type of surgery to repair the problem after birth and since Tiffany has what is referred to as a bicorunuate uterus, carrying a normal baby to term would be difficult. (Bicornuate means that instead of having a rounded pouch like uterus, she has a deeply cleft heart shaped uterus.)
The only hope is a miracle so that is what I am praying for. She is waiting for an appointment with a doctor in Houston who will take the baby in whole so that this extremely rare defect can be studied. In the meantime, I will continue to pray for a miracle. This is Tiffany’s second pregnancy. The first one ended in a miscarriage.
Thanks to all who prayed and keep up the prayers.
Oh, my goodness.
Not to minimize Tiffany’s suffering, but if you gotta be sick, Houston is a GREAT place to be. Our doctors are without compare.
Prayers for Tiffany and her husband, the baby, and you and all their friends.
hopefully this situation will be an opportunity for doctors to learn more about the condition to be better able to treat it instead of automatically giving up on the child.
“little” hope is not the same as “no hope”.
There is always a chance - no matter how slight - that some doctor, somewhere, will have a lightbulb go off in the head and try something new and groundbreaking.
Here’s hoping and praying this is one of those times.
Such a heartbreaking situation. God bless Tiffany and her baby, and you for caring.
Praying for a miracle.
I’m working on a ping list for you right now.
Okay, here’s your ping list. If you get any new posters to the thread, you can tack them on to the bottom of the ping list. Just copy the list below and put it in the To: section just as if you are replying to one person.

This is not the same as bicornuate/double uterus, which sometimes can deliver early but can also deliver early. The two ladies I knew with this problem did fine with some bedrest.
An Encephalocoel is usually fatal, but a very few cases do well. from emedicine: * Mortality/Morbidity: The prognosis depends on the associated malformations and the size and contents of the defect. Of patients with encephalocele, 21% are born live but only half survive. Approximately 75% of survivors have a mental deficit. Encephalocele recurs in 3% of patients after surgical repair, whereas the recurrence rate is higher in Meckel-Gruber syndrome (25%). The absence of brain tissue within the herniated sac is the single most favorable prognostic feature for survival.
My advice as a doctor is to give mom emotional support, and figure she will deliver early.
When the baby arrives, you love it and treat it as a normal baby. If the defect is small, you might consider surgery, but usually the child dies quickly, so supportive care is the best.
In our prayers

Dear God in heaven,
We love You and trust You,
to bring us through the hardest times.
Please hold in Your hands
This child who is doomed to die,
And bring the child into the safe shelter of Your heart,
Where we will find him radiant with joy
When we ourselves are called
To Our Father's home.
Amen.
The encephalocele contains about 90% of the baby’s brain. Unfortunately, I think this is outside the realm of surgical repair. Thank your for your kind advice and your prayers.
Also thank you for the info about the difference between the cleft and double uterus. I’m not sure which she has, I thought it was only one way.
Thanks again for the advice. God bless.
