The scent of defeat ... (Hillary Clinton's campaign is now entering dangerous territory)
Guardian ^ | 13 Feb 2008 | Michael Tomasky

Of all the ways to describe Tuesday night as a bad night for Hillary Clinton, perhaps the most dramatic is to point out this: the pundits on CNN and MSNBC started comparing her to Rudy Giuliani.

Giuliani, of course, has become a national punch line for his decision to skip the first four Republican contests and put all his chips on Florida, where he lost humiliatingly because ... he skipped the first four Republican contests.

Clinton is not in that bad a position, and fans of Barack Obama who are tempted to think so need to refrain from gloating - as of today, Clinton is still way ahead in Ohio, and a Giuliani-like collapse either there or in Texas seems unlikely.

But the tea leaves of Obama's dominating, 20-plus-percentage point win in Virginia - the seat of the old Confederacy, it still bears mentioning - contain bleak auguries for the erstwhile inevitable candidate.

A few striking numbers - some of them stunning numbers - from the Virginia exit polls. Obama carried white men with 55%. He carried Latinos with 55%. He carried Catholics with 52%. He carried voters with incomes under $50,000 with 59%. He carried independents with 62% - and far more independents voted in the Democratic primary, for Obama, than in the GOP primary, for McCain. And he carried Republicans who chose to vote in the Democratic primary (they constituted 7% of the vote) with 70%.

And, lest the Clinton campaign try to say that Obama's win was the result of his popularity among said independents and Republicans? Obama carried Democrats with 59%.

No, that’s not the scent of defeat. It’s just the candidate and her spouse.

He doesn’t have to take any position on issues. He is post-issues. He just has to say, “hope,” “believe,” Yes, I can,” and, “They can’t stop you anymore,” and victory is his.

Irish Mike,
Great Points BUT...

1) Schrillary, Her past BACKERS AND the DNC that SHE (and to a lesser extent Bill) owns has WAY Too much Invested in her getting the Presidency.

2)Think of Judge ships, Legal Bills, Land Bills, CORPORATE & UNION Legislation and ALL of the “Pay-Offs” lobbyists and Special interest Groups that have WAITED YEARS for their “Pay-Offs” to come in -

3) Think of OBAMA, (In Media News) promoted as , “ The MAN with NO Pay-Back Ties “! The “Independent Man”!

Obama will Win a Few More States- THEN

4) Just like Mitt Romeny did: On a Tuesday announce,” I AM IN IT FOR THE LONG TERM” then on a Wednesday , “ I Am Ducking out!”—only AFTER Receiving a Call from the GOP & McShames’ Camp who OFFERED Him the VP Slot if he’d duck out now!....OBAMA will:

5) ...Obama will Announce, “ I am Ducking out, Being the Great Sacrificing, All-Dedicated to the BEST for America, Candidate- and will gladly Join Forces with Hillary to WIN in 08’!!”

THUS The “ CHANGE You can Believe in WITH Experience to get it Done “ TICKET! Obama: CHANGE & Youth/MovingOn Vote SCHRILLARY: EXPERIENCE to DEFEAT Republicans.

“DEFEATING Our Opponents” or rather just plain “ DEFEATING “ Anyone in OUR way IS the real, sole Democrat Platform anyhow. Hillary NEEDS the Youth Vote she lost to Obama- and Obama needs the Experience AND Donation/BIG Cash Cows too for Campaigning.

DA

P.S. Remember (as I am sure OBAMA does deep inside) This name : “ Vince Foster “

"The scent of defeat ... (Hillary Clinton's campaign is now entering dangerous territory)"

We concentrate maybe too much on Hillary Clinton's defeat because what is Barak Hussein Obama but her long dark shadow? To the black's he black, to all other liberals he's the perfect poster boy for a multicultural, multi-ethnic candidate. He's the perfect voice for liberalism, masterful at speaking eloquently about nothing. He's the perfect face to raise up the white guilt factor that seems to be festering inside of the dufus whites who have bought into the "we are responsible for slavery" line.

Sometimes I don't know why I even bother to make such posts, no matter who wins the next election, IslamoBama, hitlery, or McInsane, America loses big.

Trying to decide who is the LESSER of the devils for November. I cannot stand Hillary. Obama is a true Marxist. I don’t believe McCPain is a true conservative. Difficult days ahead.

She is more dangerous than Obama. She may be more beatable than Obama, but I wouldn’t count on it. Why take the chance?

If Hillary can’t beat an upstart like Obama she doesn’t deserve to be in the race. I almost feel sorry for her—almost.

When a rat is cornered it will fight harder and meaner—the Clintons are masters of mean.

[She’s not worried. The “Super Delegates” are all Clinton cronies. Obama can only pull so many rabbits out of his hat because Hillary owns the “Magic Show”.]

I agree with you, but what will the reaction be by those who voted for Obama? A big part of Obama’s support comes from people who are notoriously susceptible to bizarre rumors and conspiracy theories. But in this case the conspiracy will be real. This could end up with rioting like when Martin Luther King died.

So when it’s over, how does she explain she won? She will win, don’t you know?

Au Contraire, Mon Friere. That would be as beautiful as a Rembrandt painting.........I'm going to sit there and watch with popcorn and a cold one.

If there is even a remote snowballs chance in hell she could win, I for one am unwilling to chance it. Go Obama.

The Clintons are bad losers. Very, very bad losers. I’m no fan of Obama, but I sure hope he keeps his eyes and ears open from now on.

I think a lot of that sentiment is driven by residual Clinton hatred hanging around from the 90s. Looking at it pragmatically, he's an even bigger socialist than she is, and as I said, a dangerous matchup for our guy. Obama is getting phenomenal voter turnout in these primaries. The one thing she could be counted on to do better than Obama in a campaign is dirty tricks.

The only thing Hillary is losing is the ability to look like she won the nomination fairly. Now she’s going to have to twist arms in a way that can’t completely be hidden, and resentments will ensue.

“I don’t know how, but she will pull something out of her caboose”

That’s what many freepers continue to say, but, consider: would not she have done something by now re: her bag of tricks? I think it’s just not her time; this ship has sailed, etc.

"My crystal ball may not be better than anyone else's, but I'm not sure why anyone on the GOP side would prefer an Obama candidacy to a Hillary one. People are nuts for Obama. He's young and energetic (if naive and misguided) while our guy is old and not so energetic."

I see it your way too. Hillary is far more beatable than Obama. I live in Massachusetts and I just a saw a black man, who was a Massachusetts unknown and a former Clintonite apointee no less, get elected governor. No name recognition, no experience, no special qualificiations, (he was a Clinton justice department worker), but all over the state, in every white middle class neighborhood, even in wealthy neighborhoods which you knew were conservative, one could see the lawn signs with Deval Patrick's slogan, "Together We Can". Nobody knew what it meant. Nobody knows what it means even today. But they all went to the voting booth, heavily laden with white guilt, and unburdoned themselves on the altar of Deval Patrick's skin color. For the same illogical, baffling reasons, if Hussein Obama is nominated he will be the POTUS.
