ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Imad Mugniyah, the senior Hezbollah military commander who was killed in Syria earlier this month, helped form the Mahdi Army, the military wing of the radical Iraqi Shia cleric Muqtada al Sadr, according to an Iraqi intelligence official. He was described as a “co-founder” of the Mahdi Army, Naharnet reported, based on a translation from the Iraqi daily Al Zaman.

Mugniyah helped form the Mahdi Army after the fall of Saddam Hussein’s regime in April 2003. He recruited from the Shia communities in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, and then sent the recruits to Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley for training. “The 300 fighters were trained on the use of assault rifles, booby-trapping and kidnapping operations,” the unnamed intelligence official told Al Zaman.

Once in Lebanon, the Mahdi Army recruits were sent to bases run by Brigadier General Qassem Suleimani, the commander of Iran’s Qods Force, the foreign special operations branch of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps. Hezbollah operates numerous bases in the Bekaa Valley, under the supervision of Syrian intelligence.

The links between Hezbollah and the Mahdi Army are not new. Mahdi Army fighters have admitted to training in inside Lebanon with Hezbollah, while Muqtada al Sadr also admitted his forces trained with Hezbollah and mirrored their tactics.

“We have formal links with Hezbollah, we do exchange ideas and discuss the situation facing Shiites in both countries,” Sadr told The Independent in August 2007. “It is natural that we would want to improve ourselves by learning from each other. We copy Hezbollah in the way they fight and their tactics, we teach each other and we are getting better through this.” Sadr also said his fighters trained in Lebanon while the Mahdi Army leadership conferred with Hezbollah over Israel’s plans in the Middle East.

Hezbollah is essentially the Lebanese branch of Iran’s Qods Force. Mugniyah was Hezbollah’s mastermind terrorist and also a senior leader in Qods Force.”

Report: Hizbullah Planning Attack On Israel In March

The Kuwaiti daily Al-Watan has quoted a report by top Western sources that, according to reliable intelligence information, Hizbullah has begun planning a large-scale attack on Israel in retaliation for its assassination of senior Hizbullah commander Imad Mughniya.

According to the report, the attack is being planned in coordination with Syria and Iran, and is to take place before the Arab summit next month.

It was also reported that there would be a simultaneous military escalation by Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and other Palestinian organizations in Gaza, with the aim of changing the priorities of the leaders of the Arab countries.

I have tried to keep up with the updates... I have yet to read that there has been without doubt verification that the person who died was really this person. Now his wife goes to Iran because she thinks Syria had a role in her husband's death. Seeeeems a bit strange given all the finger pointing to Israel, for this women to now be publicly out of Iran blaming Syria.

BEIRUT, Lebanon — The last time the world heard from Imad Mughniyeh, he was masterminding terror spectaculars in the 1980s and 1990s — bomb attacks on U.S. and Israeli targets, kidnappings and hijackings. But for nearly 15 years, no one has known exactly what the Hezbollah commander was doing. The only confirmation of his whereabouts came when he was killed Feb. 12 in a car bombing in Syria.

Now Hezbollah officials and associates are describing a previously unknown role for Mughniyeh: Far from being too busy fleeing enemies, he was a key commander for Hezbollah in its 2006 war with Israel. He was among the leading military and security strategists — if not the very top himself — of the group and a member of its decision-making committee, according to those who had knowledge of Mughniyeh before he was killed Feb. 12 in Damascus.

“Hezbollah’s top architect of that war was Imad Mughniyeh,” Anis Naccache, a 57-year-old longtime associate, told The Associated Press. “You can say he was like a staff general (chief of staff).” In a speech Friday, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah credited Mughniyeh with leading the group to two victories — the 2006 war and a Hezbollah guerrilla war in 2000 that led to the withdrawal of Israeli troops from its last positions in southern Lebanon.
