“You want to think very long and very hard about inviting the Bear in next door. Believe me Orthodoxy is not what drives Putin and his thugs. It’s raw power.”

One of my uncles, a fighter against the Stalinist KKE and the communist run EAM/ELAS in the Greek civil war always talked about the “tender embrace” of the Bear, something Greeks have been wary of ever since Moscow first started calling itself the “Third Rome”. But aside from the post 1917 era, Russia, kept at arm’s length, has in fact been a protector of Orthodoxy in the Balkans. It may well become that again, by default this time.

BTW, those communists came to our village and hung a person from every branch of every tree in the town square and then desecrated our church. The trick today of course is to avoid the embrace of the bear better than we did in the late 1940s.

Putin wears a cross when seen swimming. He promotes church attendance, and families with government grants.

He passed a flat tax, the government is making advances. He has the support of over 75% of the country.

And you call him a madman? Get real, where's your argument?

Every time Hitler is mentioned, as in this case, we always get detractors bringing up Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot. Please stick to the discussion on hand. Is a new State of Kosovars good or bad as a precedent or good for the WOT.

The Serbs were right.

They understood the threat Islam posed to them, and took action to prevent it. We bombed them for doing so.

Ultimately, it is WE who will be forced to do as the Serbs did, for our own survival and that of the West.

Will we?

Putin wears a cross? So do Ozzy Osbourne and Madonna! Putin's an assassin, a thug and an America-hater, regardless of what jewelry he wears.

And as far as sticking to the discussion at hand, I'm not the one who got us off the subject on the Putin-friend vs. Bush-enemy arguments. But since you asked, I think it was stupid for the US take either side in the Serbian vs. Albanian war and I said so at the time. To my eyes there was no "good side" in that fight and regardless it shouldn't have involved the U.S. Military.

Serbia never had squat to do with Slovenia or Croatia, but was awarded those territories by the Allies after WWI even though the Austrians had earlier driven the Serbian Army completely out of Serbia into the one nearby country where they could take refuge: Albania.

So have a nice cup of STFU.

IMO, the good side was, our WW2 Serbian allies, as opposed to supporting a head choppers in Kosovo and might I add Bosnia. We should have stayed out, Milosevic was handling if in the same way as we are now in Afghanistan, Iraq and Gitmo.

Free Republic isn’t a site to praise Tsar Vladimir’s neo-Communist Russia and denigrate the United States of American, comrade.

No, it's a site to call BS on stupid American policies when they are about to support our enemies in direct conflict with us.

What I know is that Serbs gave America this:, Captain Lance Sijan, along with seven other Serbian American Congressional Medal of Honor winners in the last 100 years. And, in return they got 78 straight days of this and this

And now, Bush wants 15% of Serbia's territory to give to the same people who urinate on bombed Christian churches and send the photo to their friends. Seem like a good deal to you?

Believe me Orthodoxy is not what drives Putin and his thugs. It’s raw power.

The Serbs have their backs up against the wall while NATO supports the thugs who behead innocent civilians.

Who else can they turn to and whose fault is that?

The Serbs and Russians are on the correct side of this argument.
We have no business what so ever being involved in this mess.
My guess is that we are doing this to appease our Saudi “Friends”.
This could make Iraq look like a playground brawl.
We do not want to get into a confrontation with the Russians.
