Pakistan: Taliban leader caught along border

QUETTA, Pakistan - Pakistani security forces critically wounded a top figure in the Taliban militia, among six militants captured after a firefight near the border Monday, the army said.

Mansoor Dadullah, the brother of slain Taliban military commander Mullah Dadullah, and five others were challenged by security forces as they crossed from Afghanistan into Pakistan’s southwestern province of Baluchistan. They refused to stop and opened fire, said army spokesman Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas.

“Security personnel returned fire. As a result all of them sustained injuries and all of them were captured,” Abbas said. “Dadullah was arrested alive but he is critically wounded.”

Earlier, a senior military official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to journalists, said Dadullah had died of his wounds while being flown to a hospital with the other injured men.

Two Pakistani intelligence officials, who declined to be named for the same reason, gave a different account of Dadullah’s capture, saying he was nabbed during a raid on a religious seminary in a neighboring district. It was not immediately possible to reconcile the differing accounts.

Dadullah rose in the militia’s ranks as an important commander in southern Afghanistan after his brother was killed during a military operation in Afghanistan’s Helmand province in May.

Abbas, the army spokesman, said Dadullah was captured near Gaddal, a border village in Qila Saifullah district in Baluchistan.

Two Pakistani intelligence officials, however, gave the location as Gwal Ismailzai village, in neighboring Zhob district. They said five militants, not six, were captured and wounded, some critically.

One of the officials identified those captured with Dadullah on Monday as Haji Lala, Khudai Dad, Khaliq Dad and Abdur Razzak. He said the injured suspects were whisked away by an army helicopter from Zhob airport to an unknown destination.

This is very good news, as good as getting al-Libi. He is old-school, an old pal of bin Laden, one of his few pen pals. The capture of his cohorts is very positive, good intel coming. I'll post more later and try to reconcile the differing accounts.

“He said the injured suspects were whisked away by an army helicopter from Zhob airport to an unknown destination.”

We can only hope that the Paki’s helicoptered them to a water boarding, ah, I mean water-treatment facility.

Dadullah was injured but out of danger and is being provided medical treatment in Quetta.

Rumor has it his capture is linked to a dispute between Dadullah and the Taliban’s central command, the Pakis were waiting for him in a very remote location. This was no accident. The Taliban seems to be fracturing.

I think Dadullah might have been behind us “finding” those OBL letters.

Possible, disinformation, but the letters were pretty old.

After the Pakis surrounded his hideout, Dadullah asked that they be allowed to escape from the area peacefully.

What made Dadullah think that was an option? Hope the Taliban/Paki coziness is going away.

The unit that captured him was the Frontier Corps Balochistan. Very possible (wink, wink) that the FC is getting our SF training. That’s how it’s done. Excellant.

“I’ll donate the first case, should we be big spenders and go for the Perrier?”

If it’s the sparkling water boarding treatment perhaps an old recording of Don Ho singing “Tiny Bubbles” in the background will make the Tali-bunnies start to squeal in no time.

I remember lots of speculation that as we get closer to the elections, old Osama himself might finally be nabbed.

I think the speculation was we might have known all along where he was at or had a better idea then let on, to somehow benefit our intel.

As I said, pure speculation, but sure would be nice.

If El Presidente Jorge produced Osama - just before the elections ——— “Democrat” heads would explode...

They would be screaming FOUL all the way to the Supreme Court...

If El Presidente Jorge

In the not to distant future, there are a lot of people who denigrate President Bush who are going to be surprised that they wish he were back.

Omar is in Quetta most of the time. He travels throughout Balochistan and has been getting ready for the spring offensive in Afghanistan.

The Taliban is fracturing and he is having a hard time keeping the group together. Baitullah and the Mehsuds are woking with AQs Uzbek thugs so lots of problems with the Paki Taliban.
