President Bush, in an exclusive interview with Fox News Sunday's Chris Wallace, said he believes John McCain is a true conservative, who is strong on defense, fiscally tough and thinks the Bush tax cuts should be made permanent. He also thinks McCain has a tough job ahead of him convincing other conservatives that he is one of their own.
When asked about criticism by conservative pundits like Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter, the president said "I think that if John is the nominee, he has got some convincing to do to convince people that he is a solid conservative and I'll be glad to help him if he is the nominee."
How in the name of God can he help? Bush has proven he is not a fiscal conservative, he is weak on immigration reform and border security, he has sold our sovereignty down the river, and has done more to destroy the Republican base than any other person in recent memory.
Bush said some of the criticism of McCain was the result of "probably, some personal animosity toward me. You can't please all the people all the time." Bush has certainly proven he can't please those in his own party and constituency. And he's in denial if he thinks that the Democrats can't win the presidency by focusing on him. The Democrats took both houses of congress in 2006 by focusing on Bush and those conservatives who were fed up with Bush's failure to live up to their expectations.
Although he stopped short of endorsing McCain, he appears clearly to be passing the torch to the senator from Arizona.
That torch may send the GOP up in flames.

Bush pretends that McCain is a conservative, just as he pretends that he himself is a conservative.
This is too easy. What does Bush know about being a conservative?
YY,SS,W....
Couple of running threads on this.
Well he got that right. Bush has a tough job ahead of him convincing me that he is one of our own.
Bush was my man in 2000 and 2004. I volunteered in both campaigns. But in 04 I was under no illusions that he was a conservative.
However I also knew what the alternative was and I was going to do all I could to ensure that the country did not go down that road.
Who ever the Republican nominee is this year given what the Dims are offering I will do the same this year.
I think they both should go ahead and join the Demorat party and show their true color for the whole world to see.
As much as I like our prez, he hasn’t been too much of a conservative in areas like immigration. And no, RINO McPain is definitely not a conservative.
McCain is strong on defence though, no?
Ok Will, you will think President Bush is a oonservative...you will think he is Barry Goldwater in no time.
That is the one thing I think is humorous. All the complaining...Bush is no conservative. Just wait.
You will find out what a NO CONSERVATIVE is
I think they both should go ahead and join the Demorat party and show their true color for the whole world to see.
So basically we’re getting Bush with a temper for 4 more years.
I wouldn't have a problem with him running as one.
Well, Bush though “he” was a conservative also. But, he was an idiot on that thought as well as this one.
NEOCON ALERT!

By stabbing the President and the Majority Leader in the back in the judges fight, McCain shows that he has no intention of running for President
WASHINGTONSen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) announced that he has no intention of running for President of the United States this week by his latest egregious blow to Republicans when he joined Democrats in a phony “compromise,” that will allow liberal interest groups to continue to block reasonable judges. The extreme leftist group People for the American Way called the McCain sellout, “good news,” convinced the measure would help preserve liberal activist judges’ influence in the courts.
Senate Democrats have spent the last two terms blocking Bush administration nominees through the unprecedented use of the filibuster to create a supermajority requirement for the confirmation of federal judges. Republican lawmakers, led by Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn..), were poised to return to the principle that judges with majority support should not be denied an up or down vote, but they were betrayed in the 11th hour by Sen. McCain.
“When McCain brokered the deal to betray his Republican colleagues by negotiating a private surrender to the Democrats, he publicly declared he has no interest in the Presidency. No Republican could expect to win the G.O.P. nod after betraying his party’s rank and file on one of their most central concerns,” said Grover G. Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform and a leader of the center-right coalition in Washington, D.C..
McCain has no further designs on the Presidency, said Norquist, since his actions have now so alienated the base that the fence could never be mended. Norquist went on to say that since his failure in the primary campaign of 2000, Sen. McCain has “screwed” Christian conservatives, gun owners, free press advocates, taxpayers, and now opponents of the activist judiciary. Experts say such behavior precludes any Presidential aspirations by a Republican.
“John McCain has been transfixed by the lights of the cameras,” said Norquist. “In the course of running toward the cameras, McCain has now managed to stomp on the toes of every part of the center-right coalition. He has now made it official: He will not be running for President in ‘08.”
