( Archbishop of Canterbury ) Williams hits back in sharia row
Press Association ^ | Feb 8, 2008

The Archbishop of Canterbury will try to put aside the row over sharia law as he makes his first public appearance since the controversy erupted.

Dr Rowan Williams hit back on Friday night over criticism of his comments amid growing calls for his resignation.

He made no proposals for sharia, and "certainly did not call for its introduction as some kind of parallel jurisdiction to the civil law...

his core aim was "to tease out some of the broader issues around the rights of religious groups within a secular state".

At least two Synod members have already called for Dr Williams to go ...

Colonel Edward Armitstead, a Synod member ..."One wants to be charitable, but I sense that he would be far happier in a university where he can kick around these sorts of ideas."

And Alison Ruoff, a Synod member ...: "He is a disaster for the Church of England. He vacillates, he is a weak leader and he does not stand up for the Church. I would like to see him resign and go back to academia."

Good another reason NOT to go to church...perhaps I’m really a Deist (whatever that is). I sure don’t think I’m an Episcopalian any more.

(Dr. Williams) would be far happier in a university

I hope he doesn't get hired by an American university!

I have numerous valid reasons not to go . . . and I'm a Christian.

“I was just playing,” is the favorite excuse for the schoolyard bully. “I was just encouraging discussion when I spouted my inflammatory ideas,” is the Leftist’s mantra, when such ideas provoke a fire-storm. Such “leaders” ought to be sacked forthwith as a deterrent to the next bomb-thrower, who might be discouraged from spouting off if there were some immediate consequences to such loose talk.

He is unworthy of his position, and unworthy to lead a single English soul.

Agreed fully and he should go.

However, the ninnies who picked him would pick his successor. The Church of England, and most others, are direction-less and spineless these days.

People have rights, but the concept of "group rights" (what the French revolutionaries referred to as " collective liberty") is the source of tyranny

Well put.

"Group rights" are the foundation of modern liberalism, and the Democratic party in particular.

I think he IS brilliant, a very accomplished theologian. The only problem is that he is fatally flawed.

How many academics are there in this world, who are also brilliant, but dumb, dumb, dumb when it comes to the basic moral issues of life?

I’d say that the Archbishop has similar problems.

The good archbishop is as thick as a block of cement.

He hasn't the faintest clue that the ultimate goal of the Islamists among him is the establishment of a RELIGIOUS state in England, where there will be no question of sharia law, because it will be the only law.

He's doing his best to hasten that fateful day.

If by “hitting back” they mean “lamely tries to justify his outrageous comments.”

King Henry VIII.
Many significant pieces of legislation were enacted during Henry VIII’s reign. They included the several Acts which Created the Church of England by separating the English Catholic Church from the Roman Catholic Church, although he kept most Catholic traditions. He established the monarch as the Supreme Governor of the Church of England.

King Henry would chop the Idiot Savant/Autistic Savant (Archbishop Rowan Williams) Head OFF.

500 years of Protestant thought and practice and now England is no longer free to rule the waves and herself, but would be ruled by tyrannical Islamic law ???

America has the same problem with intellectual Idiot Savants/Autistic Savants attempting to turn the country over to Islam.
Relax, the Lord Christ is keeping a sharp eye on his flock.

I also have a same problem some posting here has stated.

I hesitate when my wife ask me to attend church with her.
The most fantastic churches in the West have spineless leadership.

Notre Dame, one example. I ask you, do you believe the Church is as it is today because of outside interference from Government imposing a new order on the Church.

Homosexuals in Canada are or have imposed new laws forbidding the Preachers from calling them such names as Sodomites which as you well know is a Biblical Name for todays name (Homosexual)

His aim was...”to tease out some of the broader issues around the rights of religious groups within a secular state”.

This is not a game or an academic exercise.
