Fred Thompson, the one-time Republican presidential candidate, endorsed Sen. John McCain Friday, calling on the party to "close ranks" behind the presumed nominee

“McCain is what we have. We should close ranks and get behind him. “
You go right ahead. I enjoy my sleep way too much!
don't drop any of your marbles on the way out...
I supported Hunter, then Thompson and now although the choices left are less than desirable candidates, in the end I'll be voting for whoever is the republican nominee is.
BINGO
Let’s see if I can get this right. How does this go? Oh yeah...
“If you don’t vote for McCain, you are voting for Hillary (somehow, in your voting booth, all choices not marked “McCain” will be marked “Hillary”).
If Hillary wins, the republican party is dead, the country will cease to exist, and quite possibly will destroy the entire planet.
And jan, when that happens, it will be all your fault.
Sorry, that was tongue-in-cheek. I couldn’t help myself. LOL
Exactly my point.
The more things change, the more they stay the same...
;-)
Fred's a member of the Republican Party hierarchy. Unless he's going to burn every bridge behind him, he has to play the RP games, whether any of YOU like it or not.
Of course, it's easy for any of YOU to say he sucks or he should have stood on principle or he should have not done this or that, but then again, he has a LOT more to lose by burning those bridges than you folks do, doesn't he??? It's easy to give away someone elses stuff, just not near as easy to give away your own.
I'm sure he has a pretty crushing debt and it's pretty likely that the party has promised to pay some of that down.
Why does he have that debt? Because the "conservatives" that he depended on to help fund his effort took a hike and gave their money to more moderate and "independent" candidates and left the three conservative candidates to swing in the wind.
If you don't understand things like this, you're a political neophyte at BEST!
“It’s now time to start focusing on winning the WH. It’s time to grow up.”
You too. I make a simple statement and you insult me.
What is wrong with some of you people?
Fred is a SENATOR. A lot goes along with that, which is why so few senators become POTUS -- probably for good reason.
Depends on how many pubbies can get their knickers untwisted and grow up
“Got a rope for me? ;)”
Only if that rope is a lifeline, Twink. :D
He didn’t do it when it would’ve had the most impact:
when he dropped out and everything was up in the air.
This is for party unity ..it would look puny if he didn’t.
“It’s now time to start focusing on winning the WH. It’s time to grow up.”
If you’d like to “win the WH” with a backstabbing liar, go right ahead. For you it may be just about the immediate gratification of winning. I like to look a tad further into our future.
“And for all of you that are about to tell me to vote to keep out Obama or Hillary, shut it. You are the exact people that have run this party into the ground.”
Could not have said it better myself. All those who voted for RINOs all these years have only encouraged the GOP to keep bringing them to us. Now is the time for some tough love for the GOP by letting them get their backsides handed to them.
Was that a snipe? I couldn’t tell. It was either a reference to a supposed lack of brains on my part, or it could also be a Peter Pan reference.
McCain’s gun curbs irk GOP leadership.
The Washington Times
February 11, 2001
By Audrey Hudson
Sen. John McCain continues to tweak fellow Senate Republicans by preparing a package of new gun regulations over the objections of party leaders.
This time the former Republican presidential hopeful is teaming up with former Democratic vice-presidential candidate Joseph I. Lieberman to put a waiting period on purchases at gun shows.
“There is a long history of strange bedfellows in this town,” said Dan Gerstein, spokesman for Mr. Lieberman of Connecticut.
Mr. Gerstein was quick to add that both men have worked together in the past on several issues, including foreign policy and media violence, “so it was not surprising at all that McCain would approach us ...
‘Fred wants to be his VP’
McCain’s age and Fred’s age may work against their ticket but otherwise, Fred would probably be a great pick for McCain. He was a favorite of many Conservatives, he’s from the South and he has strong and realistic positions.
People should bombard Senator McCain’s campaign with letters suggesting he voluntarily choose to become the Vice Presidential candidate and select/endorse Hunter, Watts, or Thompson as the Presidential candidate. That way he improves the chances of a win for conservatives over the Dem candidate, shows a sincere conviction of the importance of the race and that defeating Obama & Clinton is for the good of the country, and would be an admirable thing to do. Since his actions were a central cause to resistance to his candidacy for President, for him to give up the top spot would acknowledge that the welfare of our Republic is far far more important than his personal ambition and ego.
