With Romney's pull-out (suspension, anyway), and barring huge unforeseen events, the GOP Pres nomination will go to McCain.
I didn't see any prior threads devoted to discussing a range of VP options. (I did see some suggesting particular people, like Condi Rice.)
As I see it, McCain SHOULD want to address three factors with his VP pick, although the 3d is far behind the first 2:
1. Ideological Balance. Someone to McCain's right on those issues where McCain is left, such as Amnesty, Gore-Bal Warming, Judges.
2. Relative Youth. McCain's age is a factor, making his VP pick more important than such picks usually are: McCain is much more likely than most presidents to become incapacitated, just as an actuarial matter.
3. A Popular Figure in a Swing State. Although this isn't as important, I note that there is little *geographic* benefit to picking, say, Gov. Perry of TX, because TX is going to go GOP anyway.
Thoughts?
In addition, Barbour knows the ropes and would make a fine president.
McCain-Feingold
McCain-Kennedy
McCain-Lieberman
Or, if Obama is the opponent:
McCain-Hillary
Reaching across the aisle, you know.
TIM PAWLENTY.....the deal has already been brokered.....
Considering McCain's age and his health, a solid conservative, somewhat younger VP could be important, if not for succession should something happen during McCain's hopefully one term, then for 2012.
I don't think McCain will pick Thompson (who is too close in age), Romney (who will want to be free for a 2012 run), or Huckabee (who outlived his usefulness).
McCain-Sanford? I don't know much about Sanford, but he's southern, and I'm assuming he's younger and more conservative.
No, he needs the Hispanic Bush kid. We have to consider the wishes of our millions of new Mexican citizens.
I think he will pick Lieberman too. And I have a feeling that Hillary will fire up a big F.U. to Obama and the black folks and pick Bill Richardson as her VP candidate.
That was before Romney dropped out........
I doubt McCain will be returning Huck's calls anytime soon.
If he picked me, then maybe I’d think about voting for him.
Twin brothers on the same ticket?
Lieberman
Has anyone suggested J. C. Watts?
Fred D. Thompson
Lon Cheney or even Lon Cheney, Jr.!
"The infomercial for the National Grants Conference promotes a seminar by Mike and Irene Milin thats supposed to reveal secrets for wrangling taxpayer money from the government. The show includes a panel of several unknown ex-bureaucrats. The earlier version of the infomercial also featured former congressman J.C. Watts and the current version features former congressman J.D. Hayworth. Both of these men once were movers and shakers in the halls of Congress. Now theyre peddling schemes for getting rich off government money; theyve essentially turned themselves into Matthew Lesko with better wardrobes."
Yikes, well there went Watts’ shot.

Essentially, it’s an attempt to slice away social conservatism from having a voice in the GOP.
Hey, I didn’t know McCain was in the fried chicken business ;’}
