With Romney's pull-out (suspension, anyway), and barring huge unforeseen events, the GOP Pres nomination will go to McCain.
I didn't see any prior threads devoted to discussing a range of VP options. (I did see some suggesting particular people, like Condi Rice.)
As I see it, McCain SHOULD want to address three factors with his VP pick, although the 3d is far behind the first 2:
1. Ideological Balance. Someone to McCain's right on those issues where McCain is left, such as Amnesty, Gore-Bal Warming, Judges.
2. Relative Youth. McCain's age is a factor, making his VP pick more important than such picks usually are: McCain is much more likely than most presidents to become incapacitated, just as an actuarial matter.
3. A Popular Figure in a Swing State. Although this isn't as important, I note that there is little *geographic* benefit to picking, say, Gov. Perry of TX, because TX is going to go GOP anyway.
Thoughts?

General Giap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
“Aw cmon. I have a nostalgic desire to see a recreation of the 1968 Dem. convention at Chicago. Anarchists in the streets. Thug cops. The whole works.”
Maybe Hannity will threaten to punch Colmes in the mouth...
He could end up being Predisent up to ten years if McCain were to have to leave office after 1-20-2011.
John and Fred would become the Bucket List candidacy.
Fred Dalton Thompson, the only choice!
I guess it could happen. Especially if it’s close, and Hillary decides she wants those delegates disqualified in Michigan and Florida.
Obama and his peeps could have a cow, and they end up splitting their party similarly to how we’ve split ours.
McCain wins as the moonbats in the left fight it out, and the more moderate morons in the D party decide to go Republican Lite.
McCain’s going to lose conservatives in the general. It may drop his total by as much as ten percent nationally; in individual states it will vary.
If Rudy and Bloomberg come out for McCain, for example, he could win NY.
All this assumes McCain’s head doesn’t explode at CPAC, or someone doesn’t ask him a question about amnesty, et. al.
McCain thinks he’s been ‘jostled’ in the primaries by Mitt and Thompson. The guy is going to really see what heat is all about.
When’s the last time you heard the words ‘Keating Five’? The moonbats have enough ammunition on McCain issuing from the mouths of members of McCain’s own party to do him in.

No. No. We need Dems. fighting Dems.
Bill Clinton.
One of your good points is one I’ve not seen before. To paraphrase: McCain’s had a fairly easy political path, and he seemed shaken by the few hardballs he DID get in 1999/2000 and 2007/08. So it is a reasonable concern to have about McCain that, when he’s running for POTUS against a vicious assault by HillObama and the DNC, he’ll NOT perform well under pressure.
Like a good ball club you must be building the team all the time and supporting your good players. We need a bull-pen of solid conservatives being groomed. (wash out all the perverts and hound dogs as quickly as they show themselves
Let God forgive them, not the Party.)
I was casting back my mind to that 1968 dim convention TV coverage, when William F. Buckly threatened to punch out Gore Vidol. One of the greatest live TV moments, during a whole bunch of great live TV moments that year...
DITTOS.....BIG TIME!!!
Mc Cain is being introduced now by George Allen and Tom Coburn to speak at CPAC. Why don’t we sit back and see what he has to say. Being televised on the Cable news channels.
Zesty Zell Miller
I was too young to have seen that at the time, but I have seen the footage. Vidal calls Buckley a “crypto-Nazi” to Buckley’s face, and the usually gentlemanly Buckley replied (after an anti-gay epithet which was less un-PC at that time), “stop calling me a crypto-Nazi or I will sock you in your goddamn face, and you will stay plastered.”
Vidal stopped.
