With Romney's pull-out (suspension, anyway), and barring huge unforeseen events, the GOP Pres nomination will go to McCain.
I didn't see any prior threads devoted to discussing a range of VP options. (I did see some suggesting particular people, like Condi Rice.)
As I see it, McCain SHOULD want to address three factors with his VP pick, although the 3d is far behind the first 2:
1. Ideological Balance. Someone to McCain's right on those issues where McCain is left, such as Amnesty, Gore-Bal Warming, Judges.
2. Relative Youth. McCain's age is a factor, making his VP pick more important than such picks usually are: McCain is much more likely than most presidents to become incapacitated, just as an actuarial matter.
3. A Popular Figure in a Swing State. Although this isn't as important, I note that there is little *geographic* benefit to picking, say, Gov. Perry of TX, because TX is going to go GOP anyway.

This sounds creepy, and I wrote this about last week, but here it goes:
McCain wins (I was right on that, even though every part of me didn’t want to believe that).
Because Barack and Hillary are neck and neck, they continue to wipe each other out.
McCain picks a true conservative to try and win back actual republicans.
McCain wins the general, because there are a lot of non-moonbat democrats that think both Obama and Hillary are too far left for them. McCain feels just right.
McCain is inaugurated. He either dies in office or gets whacked, and we end up with a conservative anyway, saving the Republican party and the SCOTUS. Armageddon is averted, and Jesus decides to come back in 2012 instead of 2009.
Something tells me, however, he doesn’t want a conservative on the ticket, and thinks he can win with the mushy middle.
I recommend Fred Thompson, but he may not want it. McCain, or the RNC, should definitely pick a verifiable Conservative as the Republican VP nominee. It’s the only realistic chance to have a unified party.

Good enough for me. I’m bookmarking this thread.
We need to hope that Hillary wins the Dem. nomination at a brokered convention and the Obama supported riot in the streets. Burning cars, fire hoses, the whole works. Couldn’t get any better than that.
If we both lose deals off, right?
He's been out of Congress for five years and has hopefully made some real money and can afford to come back to the fray.
“Selected, Not Elected”? Heh. I’m not hoping for riots, but I am hoping for post-Dem-convention hard feelings.
Yeah. Otherwise we’ll both be out there saying how smart the other guy was for being just as wrong as we were.
Aw c’mon. I have a nostalgic desire to see a recreation of the 1968 Dem. convention at Chicago. Anarchists in the streets. Thug cops. The whole works. The real face of the Democratic party.
Sarah Palin - Alaska Governor (Not geographical, but conservative and female)
Michael Steele or J.C. Watt
Minnesota Governor Pawlenty.
Mitt would be just fine with me, although I don’t think his strengths (hands-on management, knocking skulls, improving efficiency) lend themselves to the VP job.
I *personally* agree that Huck would be a poor choice because such would amount to a big, fat middle finger to movement conservatives (the Fred-Then-Mitt folks). But McCain may do so anyway, and it could still work.
A pro choice woman would seal the deal for me. I would have to skip the presidential part of the ballot.
McCain should pick himself. Real love there.
