With Romney's pull-out (suspension, anyway), and barring huge unforeseen events, the GOP Pres nomination will go to McCain.
I didn't see any prior threads devoted to discussing a range of VP options. (I did see some suggesting particular people, like Condi Rice.)
As I see it, McCain SHOULD want to address three factors with his VP pick, although the 3d is far behind the first 2:
1. Ideological Balance. Someone to McCain's right on those issues where McCain is left, such as Amnesty, Gore-Bal Warming, Judges.
2. Relative Youth. McCain's age is a factor, making his VP pick more important than such picks usually are: McCain is much more likely than most presidents to become incapacitated, just as an actuarial matter.
3. A Popular Figure in a Swing State. Although this isn't as important, I note that there is little *geographic* benefit to picking, say, Gov. Perry of TX, because TX is going to go GOP anyway.
Thoughts?
Woman,
Well, Doctor, what have we gota Republic or a Monarchy?
Benjamin Franlin,
A Republic, if you can keep it.
I think we can not.
I’m glad you can see it. And McCain, in particular, needs the young backup more than anyone in recent history [IMHO] but I can still see Colin for his expertise [as Condi’s] in matters of state.
My choice would be Senator Jim DeMint.
Southern, young, strong conservative, strong anti-amnesty
Liberal? Since when?
I’ve listened to and watched him for a while. He might not be Goldwater, but he’s certainly not a liberal.
Who cares? McCain, go away forever!
Nope, I like the idea of maintaining control of two of the three branches of government.
Michael Steele, Mark Sanford, Rick Santorum, or Jim DeMint.
All young, conservative guys.
John has serious health problems and he probably won’t make it in the Presidency past 4 years [maybe not even that long]. His risk for a return of the the malignant melanoma is high and his advancing dementia and mental problems will become more and more evident.
Under the circumstances, I hope he asks Fred and I hope Fred accepts. We could wind up with the conservative President we need after all.
Delta Burke is a Republican, but she has checked herself into the loony bin.
That dynamic dual-citizen and McCain staff member:
Dr. Juan Hernandez.
He’s perfect. He has experience as an aid to a president, and would finally bring in the much coveted Hispanic vote for the GOP.
He has admitted it in his own book. Many Vietnam Vets tell of favors and special treatment for McCain. This whole "war hero" thing is largely made up. His entire military career is one of undeserved commands and promotions. How many planes did he crash before he was "shot down"?
One thing against Powell is this. I have it on very good authority that his wife, Alma, does NOT want him returning to public office/ campaigning. She didn’t want him to serve as W’s first SecState as it was.
Bad pick.
This is not about what makes you happy--it's about getting enough votes to win.
A woman or minority for VP who appeals to the right and to the left is what's needed to win.
Lieberman would be amazing!
O.K., so she IS compatable, another looney moderate RINO.
================================
You're on.
Let's say that the loser has to go on 5 top threads every day for a week and post that the other guy is great and ping the other guy to the threads.
That's 35 threads total over a weeks time.
Agree? Or are ya yellow?
At that point, I wish they’d simply do away with the charade, and the Democrats can set up their Clinton/McCain ticket to oppose the Republican McCain/Clinton ticket.
I like DeMint, too. Only slight downside is that, being from a pretty deeply Red state, he couldn’t help swing it.
I’m with you on the life issue. Funny how something so important seems to have taken a backseat during everyone’s tantrums.
Let’s keep things in perspective.
